Driving license

I have a valid and 'good for life' driving license from another EU country. Can it be converted into an Italian one? If so, what are the rules, restrictions. I'm praying it doesn't require taking any tests. Many thanks.

Dear Emiliaromagna, Boy Italy is tough: http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/vehicles/driving-licence/driving-licence-recognition-validity/italy/index_en.htm...looks like they will give you 2 years to get an Italian license. Check with your local Motorizzazione.
We moved here c. 1 yr ago and just got our licenses...it was a lot of work, but can be done even if you do not speak fluently...test is in Italian only. Word of advice: give yourself at least 6 months to study and become confident with the exam by taking/passing online practice tests. Google: Webpatente 4.2 for website of practice tests. Goodluck

I don't think that is correct. As an EU citizen with a valid EU license it is good anywhere in the EU. As long as it is valid you are good to drive with it in Italy, or you can exchange it for an Italian one, you do not have to take the written or driving tests. As an American in Italy as a legal resident or an American relocating and becoming an Italian citizen with an American license you will have to take the written and driving test. Italy does not recognize a US license after one year of residency.

At a minimum, depending on the country it is good for 10 or 15 years, depending on the EU country of residence. Once it expires you have to change it to your country of normal residence.

Thank you for your two messages, Maluza86. I did actually look at the website which confirmed what I was almost sure about - that my licence will be exchanged for an Italian one, no exams, no testing required, just exchanging for an Italian one two years after moving there. Thanks again!
