Help, Help...I am in the process of renewing my PdiS (elective resident), have all the paperwork in, fingerprints taken now I just wait for it to arrive. My problem is I'm driving to UK and will need to fly home (Italy) and do not have my actual permit yet...will there be a problem when I arrive at the Italian airport customs? Anyone have experience with this? Anyone know how to find out? Thank you

The real problem is you made plans without knowing if they were feasible given your situation.
I suggest you change your plans and drive nowhere outside of Italy until you have received your renewal.
No one can tell you if you will or will not be stopped etc. by Immigration (not Customs). Or if stopped, what the consequences will be. You could get a slap on the wrist or you could get denied entry. Wanna gamble?
Immigration officers in every country have wide discretionary powers. The key word is discretionary. That means there is no way to predict reliably how they will act in any given individual situation.

Hi codybrandy. I thought I read sometime ago that if you have the receipts and could prove you have lodged an application that was ok. Hope all is well and you have settled in. Regards.

Our dear friends at ISIS have assured additional scrutiny for your protection. I don't think these are good times to gamble with your status.

We were in the same situation this autumn when we were returning from Sicily to Puglia and didn't yet have our permessi di soggiorno, although it had been granted. The airport authorities never asked for it and we had no problem returning.

While that is true, you are taking a chance as others have said. When you enter passport control now at the airport the signs specifically say to have you residence documents (permesso di soggiorno) along with your passport available. Everyone is banking on the Italy of "yesterday", but I will tell you everything is electronically linked now. I frequently travel back and forth to the UAE for contract work and have been asked several times, where I live, where I work and for my permesso di soggiorno. Think about trying to enter the US or any other country for that matter without the proper documents, and see what will happen...whey do you think Italy will be any different. They are definitely cracking down, especially with all the terror events and immigration problems. But in the end it's your call.

Don't you just love it when someone writes, 'I read' or 'I heard' that you can do it. Or someone writes, 'I did it and didn't get asked about it'.
Hearsay or anecdotal stories are NOT evidence that something can or can not be done by a given individual and be GUARANTEED to have no problem.
The ONLY real advice anyone should be giving to a question like this is that there is NO GUARANTEE anyone can give you.
I'm glad to read you will change your plans codybrandy. That's the only prudent decision.

Hi, codybrandy, at https://www.justlanded.com/italiano/Italia/Articoli/Visti-e-permessi/Ingresso-in-Italia-cittadini-extracomunitari I just saw this:
"Gli stranieri in attesa del rinnovo del titolo di soggiorno possono uscire dall'Italia e rientrarci se in possesso:
della ricevuta rilasciata da Poste Italiane S.p.A. che attesta l'avvenuta presentazione della domanda di rinnovo del loro permesso di soggiorno o della carta di soggiorno, del titolo di soggiorno scaduto, del passaporto o altro documento equipollente."
I believe this quote is taken from the relevant law; perhaps you could do some more online research and find it.
