Best way to ship clothing and a few books

I'm thinking of shipping some of my clothes and a few of my favorite books to Trieste, rather than take multiple suitcases. Wondering what the most efficient and least expensive options are. Not sure of the weight, as yet, but I've checked the US Postal office - It's about $150 for 40 lbs. This seems like a good option, but curious to hear others' experience.

If I ship, is there a customs fee when it arrives in Italy?

I used ship my bag for a similar shipment. Cost was equivalent. The transit time will likely be less. My stuff was there in under a week.
