Dual Citizen-Residency

I can't find my notes I made on this. I am a dual citizen and will be living and working in Italy for 4 1/2 months. What do I do to change from AIRE citizen to living in Italy resident? Even if just for this amount of time I need to make changes right? THANKS.

You need to apply for residency in your comune once you are in Italy. However, you will not be able to do so unless you enter into a long-term (I think 2 years minimum) lease or purchase a home.

If you are not planning to reside more-or-less permanently in Italy, you do not need to (in fact, cannot) apply for residency nor do you need to change your AIRE registration.

LindaAnn,

Just to follow up and clarify: since you cannot obtain "residenza" status in Italy without a long-term lease (which I presume you do not intend to enter into), your legal place of residence will remain in the US. That is why you do not need to change your AIRE registration with your consulate.

If you *did* establish residenza, you would not need to notify the consulate; that would be taken care of by your new comune.

In the meantime, whenever you are in/out of country for any length of time, you should consider notifying both the US and Italian consulates as to your whereabouts and contact information in the event of an emergency.

Italy likely has something similar, but I cannot find it just now.

I will only be there until the end of May. The school that I am working for has an apartment for me so it will not be in my name. I thought I had to go and let them know that I was living in Italy.

When I file to pay italian taxes on my income there- it won't be out of place that I didn't change from AIRE?
