Hi- we're planning to travel to Italy to establish residency as part of the requisition of citizenship process. I am told that we need not be there more than 90 days for this. Does anyone know if we can do a short term rental or "holiday rental" and have it considered as acceptable "residence" in this process? Thanks in advance!

I just completed this process in the summer of 2016. When I spoke to a lawyer about setting it up, it sounded like you needed to have a regular rental. I ended up staying with a family member.
If possible, if you have any contacts in the town you will be doing the reacquisition, you should try to talk to the local anagrafe and the questura. In my little town they were not familiar with the expedited reacquisition process, which led to some delays (for example, several officials were not familiar with the process and thought I had to stay a year to regain citizenship).
We ended up going to a regional office who finally clarified the process. Try to prepare as much in advance, as there are several bureaucratic steps you need to go through, and getting them started as quickly as possible important.

Thank you for your advice! It's always helpful to hear other experiences! We are starting paperwork at the local Consulate here in the States next month and will be applying in Rome. Hopefully they are familiar with the expedited process. We do have relatives in Rome so we will see what we can do.

Lots and lots of variables. Took me 8 months and I had all my documents, as required. You say reacquisition. That means you want your former citizenship reinstated. If that is what you mean then there are some minimum times. if you yourself was a citizen and lost it then you can get it back within a year of establishing residency, which takes some months. If your parent lost it, then it takes two year residency. Grandparent -3 years. If on the other hand you are talking about having your current italian citizenship recognized then the process can take less than 90 days if everything goes your way. In my case a letter was requested from my birth country consulate, Venezuela, that was lost (due to incompetence) that took 8 months to get. So the final answer: it is possible but very highly unlikely.
