Best / Worst Airlines

Finally getting ready to book my tickets! I'm looking into airfares beginning mid to late April. I'm planning to fly into Venice, then take a shuttle service (via ground) to Trieste. TAP has the best fares, thus far, but reviews are pretty sketchy. I've been planning on buying one way, but in some cases, r/t is much less expensive.

Would love to hear from others re your experience with TAP and/or other airlines. I'll be flying from JFK, but perhaps that doesn't matter.

Thanks much!
Theresa

We have flown Meridiana the last two trips direct from JFK to Naples and then JFK to Palermo. I think they only fly to one northern Italian city. Not sure which one. The flights were always packed but the prices were extremely reasonable. No complaints.

Alitalia (https://www.alitalia.com) usually has good deals that time of year JFK- > Milan.

Worth looking into.

Thanks DoppioCittadino,

Due to some physical issues, I'm trying to fly into Venice, which will make getting to Trieste a little easier, but am keeping Milan in mind, just in case.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Because of the attempts to cut costs, all airlines are getting worse with smaller seats and less leg room and charging for luggage and other problems. US airlines are leading the way to the bottom so it would be best to avoid them. European airlines are a bit better, but not much. Having said that, we are talking about a 9 hour flight. Just go for the least expensive fare (and shortest time) and buy the "extra comfort" seats that give you a bit of extra space (similar to what coach used to be). Also, you can get very cheap intercity flights in europe so don't limit yourself to flying to the closest city. You can fly Milan or Rome to Trieste pretty cheaply.

Check Norwegian air. Not sure if and where they fly to Italy from JFK but their routes are growing and their service is great!

Ciao Sergios,

Just seeing your post now.

You're so right! TAP was the cheapest, but reviews were so lousy (one friend told me they were taking off with people walking in the aisle!), I opted out of that option!

I wound up booking through Tavelopod.com. I opted for a r/t - leaving in April with a return in December - r/t fare, in some cases, was cheaper than flying o/w. $620 r/t, plus $100 for an extra bag. More than I anticipated, but it's done.

Found out later that the return flight, with Air France, charges for advanced seats for each leg of the flight - irksome, as no mention from from agent who "helped" book the flight. Apparently, if I get my seats at the airport, there's no charge, but that's leaving it up to chance! (Get up often and prefer an aisle). A good lesson when booking a future flight!
