Hi, We are a semi retired couple wanting to stay in Florence for 2 months -- Sept and Oct. , renting a 1 bedroom apartment. If we love it were' considering longer visits. We have been there are tourists a few times, but do not know the residential areas. Are there any recommendations as to where to live/ or NOT to? We like to walk so we really don't mind a 15 to 20 walk into town. Thank you if you can help us determine where to stay -

Jackster,

I didn't realize you live in Florence.

We are planning to spend at least a year there ourselves when we finally make the move. Although we have visited many times, I would also be interested in your thoughts regarding neighborhoods, etc.

Oh, well, I guess I'll post my thoughts publicly. Ha! It very much depends on what you like. I like being in the thick of things and live 5 minutes from the Duomo, but it does get busy during the tourist season. The only two areas I would avoid in the center (in terms of living) would be a few streets on either side of the train station and in the Santa Croce area. Nothing against university students, but they do like to party and it can be noisy at night because of that. The further away one gets from the direct center, the calmer is becomes. To stay within walking distance, or a short bus ride into the center, just north of Piazza Della Libertà is more residential, as is the other side of Piazza Beccaria. It's also quiet and nice around the American Embassy. On the other side of the river, the Oltarno, has a bit different flavor. Around Piazza Santo Spirito is lovely, and as far down into the San Frediano area is still an easy walk/bus ride to major areas. A little more "green" would be the San Niccolo neighborhood, or down to, and even the other side of, Porta Romano (although you'd be getting outside of the "walking distance range). Really, you can't go really wrong no matter where you stay, it just depends on whether you want hubbub or more quiet. Feel free to message me with any questions you might have.
