May I ask for what purpose?

I suspect that what you really want is a "Notaio" - akin to a Notary Public in the US, however much more powerful in Italy.

Notai handle most all real estate transactions in Italy.

Right, a notaio, the one that checks on our behalf the property, formulates the contract, etc..

The Notaio make the deeds and the completion; before you need a lawyer to check the title, avoid pitfalls in buying process see here https://www.linkedin.com/in/marco-calabrese-attorney-39603534/

He is an English speaking lawyer generally dealing with English speaking clients

Before you pay for an avvocato, ask what exactly they are going to do for their fee. I am not against them for certain , specific situations but at least be clear what you are getting. Above all, make sure they are an Italian avvocato, meaning they are licensed to practice law in Italy. There are plenty of British and American lawyers who advertise services like this but cannot speak or read the language, have no clue about Italian property law, most important they are not able to practice here legally.
Title search , leins check against the property? The notaio, who gets paid regardless- they handle that . Translation? Well , it only means you are going to be paying the avvocato on top of the certified translator he will farm out the work to. If you are using an agente immobiliare they need to be listed in your compromesso and atto , it is illegal for them not to be . It also absolves them of any legal responsibility if you can't legally connect them to the sale. The days of paying "in Nero" are coming to an end and no person touting themselves as a professional should be asking you to pay portions of your purchase in cash , underdeclare , or ask for their fee in cash.

A bit of a rant but I meet people all the time who have paid huge sums for totally bogus work. Your best investment is a qualified translator

Thanks Linda!

So in the "normal" case a Notaio is good enough to ensure my interests are kept?

it is a choice. I think best money spent is an independent, competent translator. People throw money away on so many unnecessary things but won't pay someone who can help them sort out exactly what is being said. It's always a cousin, friend , or someone who has a hand in the deal- in your home country you would think conflict of interest right away. You need the translator anyway if you cannot understand Italian , Anything you sign can be nullified . It is the law. A good notaio can advise you if there is something with the property that would require legal help ( like rights of way to a driveway or well it isn't always in writing and the nice neighbor or seller next door might change completely the day after you become the new owner . Suddenly you have no water or cows coming thru your yard every day. Ask questions and don't take anything verbal as legal . For these things a lawyer can help . Better the very experienced avvocato who speaks Italian and the paid translator who has nothing to gain other than their fee.

It's up to you to ask the questions. No avvocato or notaio is going to go look at the place and think them up for you.
These are only my highly subjective opinions from the many purchases and sales I have done. Made plenty of gaffs, luckily nothing major.
