We are Americans but we have apartment in Ecuador. We are coming to Italy because we are thinking of Italy or Spain as change. We have lived in Ecuador for six years. We will be in Italy in May for seven weeks to look around. We are staying southern Italy in Calabria. We will be using train because we purchased the globe passes. Anything special we need to be aware of when traveling by train?

Keep a close eye on your luggage and other belongings; try not to store it on the shelves provided near the ends of the rail cars as it is not unusual for luggage stored there to be carried off by petty thieves.
Don't allow yourself to fall asleep in any rail car that is not heavily occupied by a mix of people. :)

You will need to make reservations on many of the express trains and that will cost you a few euro to do. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the ride. As per the cliche however, the regional trains often do not run on time. Some of the busy routes can end up being quite behind.

Oh yeah, trains can be markedly less expensive if you purchase your tickets a few days in advance.
A little bit of planning can save you a lot of money.
