Where to study Italian with good transportation and affordable housing

My wife and I are interested in spending 3 months in Italy starting this January to study the language and explore places to settle for longer term later in the year. We are Italian/Americans and our son lives in Europe so we would like to be closer and love Italy. Our criteria is a walker/biker friendly city, affordable housing, reasonably close [1-hour +/-] to the airport, not overrun with tourist. Since our son and his wife live in Denmark we are considering north of Rome. Plus we have explored a lot of southern Italy, where my family is from. All suggestions welcome.

Think Liguria! We are equi-distant to Genoa and Pisa inland from the 5Terre. That's important to us as our daughter lives in the UK and we can fly out of either for less than E100 round trip (even took one Ryanair flight for E19 each way) Both airports are 1 1/2 hrs. away. Sestri Levante and Chiavari have very good language schools and all on a very good train line. Of course the farther inland the cheaper the rentals. Check out Sarzana...beautiful, historic centro. Rentals c. E500 and up/month. Not too touristy, walkable and good bus/train connections. Good sized city but still has an old world feel. Good Luck
