Suggestions for Sardinia

My wife and I have rented a home in Lucca for two months, Jan/Feb attending a language school for a few weeks, exploring a part of Italy I have not explored before and seeking a possible long-term rental as we apply for residency. Our third month of our 90-day visa we are uncertain at this time. However, we would like to spend some time in Sardinia as we have never been there. My question is which town would be better to visit Alghero or Cagliari? Would a week be too much? Now before anyone reminds me that it will be probably cold and rainy we are well aware of that LOL. Alternatively, we have thought about Sicily or perhaps Puglia. But I have always wanted to see Sardinia, so that is first on my list. My grandfather was from Agropoli and I have visited that region a lot.

We have a summer house in Sardinia but it is near Olbia/Costa Smeralda as we have a dive shop in the town of San Teodoro so I can say that if you must choose between just Alghero and Cagliari, go to Cagliari. It is so much bigger than Alghero, has more things to do, and is also so much more beautiful. Although Alghero also has its own charms. Public transportation is almost non existent there so it is best to rent a car. And then if you have your own car, you can actually go around the island in a week as it is not that big. Hope this helps!

I don't want to say anything bad about Sardegna but I also felt the way you do a couple years ago. So my wife and I went there. What I found was that Sardegna is an island of gorgeous beaches. That's pretty much it. The interior.
although visually stunning in places, lacks much interests in terms of long term living. Unless you like isolated small towns. I did not spend any time in Cagliari so I can't speak to that. We did go to the Costa Smeralda but unless you have a 200 foot yacht you will not fit in and definitely will not afford it. Santa Teresa Gallura was nice but nothing that you will not find on the mainland. And then remember if you live on a far away island, leaving and coming back are an added expense. I found Corsica to be a bit more interesting and I chose Sicily because it had more to offer, although there are problems with that place as well. By all means don't take my word for it. Go explore and decide for yourself.

I have lived 1/2 year in Sardinia, 1/2 year in the US for the past 5 years and have been traveling throughout Italy and Europe for the past 30 years. I landed in the Alghero area, and rented in Alghero proper and two small towns over three years and finally bought an apartment. I like the area because I am an outdoor person: run, bike, hike swim etc. Excursions to the interior and boating are also attractive --and close to the airport.
