Does anyone know if after living in Italy on an ER visa for 5 years and obtaining your EC longterm residence permit (permesso di soggiorno per soggiornanti di lungo periodo), are you then allowed to move anywhere in the EU? Or do you have to wait until 10 years upon obtaining permanent residence?

You're looking at it the wrong way. It's not Italy that determines that. It's the country you intend to move to that matters. You need to check with them if it's allowed.

I can't answer your question suffice to say that I've not had any problems travelling to Shenzhen states on my carts d'identita card. I would be very interested to know if you succeeded in getting your long term residence visa and if so, after how many years residence n Italy.

Sergios, thank you. I did not yet obtain my LT residence permit but had heard mixed messages about the ability to move within the EU upon obtaining this permit. I will check with the countries as you suggest.

PhilG, no....I haven't yet secured this permit. I am still on my second PdS so that will be next. I'm hearing from some on this exchange that you cannot obtain this permit if you have an ER visa, so I guess I will find out if it is possible when I apply.

Thanks for your reply, Shelbyt. Looks like we're in the same situation. Let's alert one another to the outcome of our respective PR applications. Meanwhile, have you been able to renew your PdS every two years or is it annually? In my case, the Questura say I need to renew annually which, needless to say, is a pain.

PhilG, I will let you know the outcome. I have been renewing my PdS every 2 years. I know in some provinces renewal is only for 1 year. I don't understand why, seems to be the usual "there are no consistent rules" and they each do as they wish.

Hi Shelbyt and PhilG, I'm also in the second year of my PdiS for ER. I'd be curious where you live. I have also read posts that say if you have an ER visa you can not get the long term residency. I've also heard that you can not get 2 years and must apply each year. We put in for 2 years last year but based on a glitch on our part we were only given 1 year. I'm wondering if the glitch was an excuse or if it isn't possible. Thanks!

Understand that Italy is one of the more difficult countries to gain entrance thru the visa process.

I am on my third two year PDS (Elective Residence), I have applied for the Long Term Residency. about one month ago. Particulars of the PDS and Long Term Residency appear to depend on the local administration.
