Hello
I have been offered a job in Abidjan. Since I know nothing about the costs of living there, could one of the resident experts tell me:
1.How much it would cost to rent a 2 bedroom apartment in one of the good residential areas?
2.How much would it cost a couple (no kids) a month to follow a reasonable standard of living?
Thanks
Chaku

Hello Chaku, there are several areas here in Abidjan. The rent would depend on the area you will be living in of course. Here you have Cocody, Zone 4, Rivera and Marcory. The choice would depend on your job location. For example the 2 bedroom apartment in Zone 4 would cost you no less than $500 a month which is minimum. In Cocody it will be cheaper, there you will be able to get the same for $350. 2. As for us, we are a young couple living in Zone 4, we spend no less than $1200 a month including rent, bills, food, internet, gym, going out once a week (not including petrol, mobile). Hope this information will be usefull.
Best regards, Tamara

Hi Tamara
Thank you. Your information was very useful. I am at the negotiation stage with the employer and currently do not know where exactly the office is located in Abidjan.
Just a couple of questions more:
Do flats in Abidjan come furnished, or do the tenants take care of that?
Is there an Indian expat population there? (I am from India).
Thanks
Chaku

Dear Chaku! Well, normally the flats here do not come furnished... Maybe there are some cases where you could find the furnished houses but that would cost you more, of course. There are lots of indians here and you will defenatly meet with some of them. there are couple of indian restaurants, a temple and on sundays some gather to play cricket. I wouldnt say that indian community is very much active but sometimes the indian restaurant called Delhi Darbar offers special meals and activities during the indian holidays. As for the tax.. I dont really know the answer to that. Normally, the tax people pay here is 6.5% and the rent should not be taxed. Maybe your company could guide you more on the tax issue. If you have any other questions, dont hesitate to ask! Best regards, Tamara

Dear Chaku, In general Zone 4 is 'the place to be', most restaurants are there. Cocody, Deux plateaux and Marcory are also nice. If you want a good apartment in Zone 4, I advise to calculate with no less than USD 1000. This app is then not furnished, but the price includes security of the building (whch is advisable). I moved to Abidjan about 3 months ago and am still looking for an app to rent. (currently stay in a hotel) It's not easy to find an app, often they are rented the same week that they become free. As most business is in Zone 4 and surroundings, everybody wants to stay there.... A lot of traffic jam at mornings/evenings makes that it can take very long before you reach the office (when you are not near the company). Often, and alos in my situation, its the compay who pays the bill for the period abroad... So 2nd advise; check first where your company is located and decide then further. Bed and breakfast in a double room will cost you USD 80-100 per day. Kris

Hi all!
I am not sure that you will have to spend a 1000 dollars for a good flat. You can find a nice flat for 600 dollars. We pay $500 for a 2 rooms flat+hall and kitchen, in Zone 4, we also have security and a parking place and the location is really nice. But you will have to hunt for such properties for quete a long time. For a couple its more than enough. It also depends on the way you negotiate. Anyway, I wish you good luck with your job taking! Best regards, tamara
