Hi work/living/pets.
I lived in Abidjan for 7 years, but moved back to USA in 2001. People do have pets (some are a bit unconventional ) so there are some veternarian services there.
Healthcare is adequate. I gave birth to both of my children at PISAM and have other friends who birthed at PISAM and smaller facilities. While health care is adequate, please keep in mind that it is not the USA or Britain.
I would ecquate having a child there, like having a child in USA/Britain 40 years ago.
When I was there you could find work with the American School/ Embassy if you do not speak French. I know that has changed a lot as a huge portion of the English speaking community left after the 3rd coup. You should still check with your Embassy though and see if they have anything.
I took French lessons when I first arrive in Plateau, they were really helpful!!!! Can't remember the name of the place, but I am sure there are plenty.
Zone 4 is best as the airport is on that side and if there are any problems you can get out easily. I lived in Plateau and during the 1st & 2nd Coups they shut down the bridges, so we were stuck... highly recommend you stay on the other side of the lagoon :)
It is a beautiful country, with beautiful people! There were serveral regular Mother/Child groups when I lived there which was great as I developed many friendships that I still maintain and they were in English.
Be aware that crime is high, and no matter what you actual ecomonic status is, if you are white you will be percieved as being of money.
I never drove there and took a driver, however I did have friends who drove. You will be hassled constantly by police (standard way that they make money).
There are fabulous restaurants & clubs throughout Abidjan and the beaches are great.
If you are decide to move there I still have English speaking friends there and can give you contact information.
I did enjoy my time there, but I cannot say that I miss it :)
