Hi all,

I'm following my husband to Abidjan in October. I'm bringing my little travel companion (little cocker) who has already been to a few countries with me, however I've never been to Africa. I don't have any idea what it's going to be like and of course I don't have a job, in fact I don't know what I'm going to be doing at all. I thought it would be a nice opportunity for me and the little monster to discover Abidjan together but I don't know how people react to dogs and to people with dogs. Can I go to the beach? Is the Forêt du Banco a safe place for a woman to walk her dog alone? And while I'm at it, I have a Bachelor's in Zoology and a Master's in Oceanography, I speak English, French, and Mandarin, if anyone knows of any job opportunities for someone like me. I'm open to anything, translation, tutoring, babysitting, dog walking, lab technician/assistant etc. Any advice you could give me would be great :). Gigi.

Hi Gigi
It was like reading my own posting!
We will move to Abidjan on 27 July with 2 beagles. One was born in the Philippines and traveled with us to Guatemala, our home for 2 more days. We will travel to Switzerland for a Holliday and then Abidjan. For Our youngest beagle it will be the first time traveling. We will be living in Cocody and I am not sure if I can walk my dogs. I am following my wife around the world who is a Swiss diplomat. Lets keep in touch and at least the dogs will have a play buddy.
As for jobs. I know the Swiss Ambasador is a very big sponcer of the Abidjan zoo and need loads of help. I am planning to see if I can help him in any way. There are also a great dive club, GERSMA (PLONGEE SOUS-MARINE) · Diving

Hey Randel,

I just read your post from a year ago. It would be great for her to have a few dog buddies there and if ever you need, I could dogsit your beagles. Pookie (little female cocker/cavie cross) has never been on a plane but she's been on ferries, trains, loves cars so hopefully she won't be too nervous on a 6 hour flight. I'm still looking into all the papers and vaccinations that she'll have to get but it doesn't look as complicated as coming back will be. My husband is a pilot so he's going there before me to find us a house most likely in Zone 4 and he'll keep me posted about what he hears and sees about people with dogs (and if there's a good vet around) and I'll keep you up to date too. I'm currently working in Bordeaux for July and then heading back to Paris to work in August and then I'll have a month to get my act together and pack everything up. The Abidjan zoo sounds great, would be lovely to work with animals after all this time in the lab. And I've always wanted to try diving, well good to know that there might still be some things to keep me busy. Can't imagine what I would do if it were just me and Pookie in a house for a year... we'd go mad. I'll check out the site you suggested and yes please do keep in touch. Good luck!!
