I am interested in connecting with any American expatriates who live and work in Jamaica. My husbands company is opening there in 2002 and I would appreciate any information I can get beforehand. Thanks

" My husband, 12 year old son, and I will be moving to Kingston in August 2002. My husband, Ron, has accepted a teaching position with Edna Manley College (Scenic Design and technical assistance)I don''t know what I am going to do there yet. I am exploring some options with internships...Anyway, where on the island will you be relocating? Ron and I have spent much time in Negril, and last summer toured the island. Kingston is definitely going to be a change of pace. Would love tips from anyone about relocation from the states to Jamaica. Thanks. "

Greetings... I am an optometrist living in Minnesota...who has worked and lived in Kingston...the year of 1997...I worked at FISH a low income health clinic in Papine... Well Kingston is an awakening for a caucasian American...at the time everyone wanted to hear about Bill Clinton and thought all Americans must be like him...I really enjoyed the weather and the need in my field for eye care...I am a army veteran and live mostly off of my pension...so I worked for a stipend only...i.e. $200. USD a week...I do plan to return to Kingston... and am friends with a few Americans there...many Pastor Peter Kirby...with Lutheran Ministries to Jamaica...you can find there web site...if you are interested in corresponding with me...I will look here or you may send direct to mjohn@maxminn.com I will look to hear from you and Best Wishes this Christmas...MJohn

I am planning to move with my wife and daughter to Jamaica in August 2002 to work as a lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Mona. I am somewhat concerned about the duties/customs that may be payable as the information that I have seems only to deal with "Returning Residents" and we are from the United States. What are the duties applicable for such a move? We have a 4-bedroom house in the US and will be moving all of our furnishings, household items, and, of course, my library of books.
Also, since Jamaica runs on 50 cycles, instead of 60 cyclces, what types of equipment can't run there (e.g., washing machine, dryer, refrigerator, computer, TV, VCR, etc.)
