I am planning to move to jamaica in a couple of months. I am bringing my fiancee over from europe and we need a cheap/affordable place to live. Either in Kingston or Montego Bay. Can someone recommend a good place with prices and if possible the cost of living, price of food, groceries, medical care etc. thanks.

Looking to move to Negril or Kingston. Any info on extremely affordable places to live would be appreciated. Close to the beach would be nice. Will not have a car so need to be walking distance from groceries etc.

What is your budget? Negril has many rentals available especiallyh on the West End. Its easy to get to the beach and there is convenient shopping/local taxis.

I moved to JA this year - The best way would be if you know someone in the area you want to live, good places at affordable rates are often rented by private citizens and are not advertised. With that said you can look at www.propertyadsja.com, they have a couple apartments for rent listed on that site. In terms of Negril, typically the least expensive area to rent is on the West End (cliff area). Ii is a bit of a walk to Sunshine Plaza (shops and groceries) but it is walkable plus know that there are little grocery stores along One Love drive (the main road). Second cost of living - three things will stick out as hella expensive: electricity, water and basic personnel items like shampoo, soap, deodorant laundry soap etc. Also groceries; local items are okay priced but things that would be a "luxury" ie. baked goods, butter etc are high priced. But with all that said, I do most of my shopping for the above items at MegaMart or Progressive both in Montego Bay. Lots of product to choose from and much more reasonably priced, sorry to say it but MegaMart is somewhat like Walmart (except MegaMart is clean and organized). Medical Care - can't really speak to that much other than I have been to the doctor was not charged for the visit but for the prescription meds which seemed reasonable. Hope this helps, overall it is better to utilize someone here that you know and trust to help you find a safe place to live with access to the things you want.

What on earth do you mean "sorry to say" that MegaMart is like Walmart? MegaMart and Walmart do not even belong in the same sentence for goodness sakes. If a Walmart ever opened up in Jamaica, there would be a giant sucking sound as every Jamaican from Kingston to Negril flocked to their doors!!!

The best way to find a place to live that fits your needs to is work with a GOOD real estate agent that knows the area you are looking. I find it odd that both of you say you want to live in either Kingston or MoBay/Negril.... these are such different areas. If you want to live in Negril, you certainly don't want to live in Kingston. If you want to live in Kingston, you have to know that MoBay and Negril are totally different... I am a full time American real estate agent living and working in Negril. You can private message me your email addresses and what you are looking for and I can see what I can find. I manage a lot of apartments in Negril as low as $14,000 JAD up to $800 US per month - just depends on what you are looking for.

Bahaha! :) MegaMart is like Walmart in that they carry most everything from food in "value quantities" to outdoor gear, holiday decorations, household items and yes a ton of Jamaicans do shop there (and there is one in Kingston) I "flock" to the one in MoBay from Lucea (but I have a car easier to do bigger shops and haul home in a car than a taxi)
