Hello:
Wea re relocating to Ocho Rios, my husband got a job about 30 km away. We have 1 year old baby and I am concerned about our safety and also about the weather.
We owuld be living in a condo complex with security, but I will be on my own most of the time.
Also, we were warned about cockroaches and geicos. Are they really everywhere? What about the hurricanes, how scary is it? And do they hit Northern coast at all?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, sionce we have to make decision any day now....
Thanks!

I visited Jamaica a while ago and contacted red24 since my dad is a member of the service. Please have a look at this overview from their website about Jamaica. It can give you an idea of what to think about in case you decide to move there.

Tourism in Jamaica is the largest foreign exchange earner for the
country; therefore, authorities are now improving security around tourist areas and have implemented roving police patrols. The Jamaican government has started implementing a larger police presence, including special tourist security personnel, especially in tourist areas such as Montego Bay. Mobile patrols have also been introduced. On their members website, security experts red24 say "Visitors travelling to smaller villages should be aware that these areas may not have the police infrastructure that the larger resorts and tourist areas do." They advise travellers to be aware of the high crime rates in Kingston and surrounding areas and to stick to tourist resorts in Jamaicas north coast (where Ocho Rios is situated), which are virtually crime free.

The hurricane season runs from June to November. They advise
travellers to be aware of the possibility of a tsunami along all coastal areas, monitor local media and weather reports during the hurricane season and plan several escape routes out of the area and establish a safe house to go to outside of the hurricane zone.

Good Luck!

I have re-located to Ocho Rios from London England. I have a 5 year old daughter. Jamaica is as safe as any other country in the world. I lived in a gated security development in London, so this is a common trend worldwide. Don't worry, enjoy the beautiful weather and the lovely food!

Well hopefully you'll have more geckos because they eat the roaches. No, I don't find either a problem when you consider the mosquitoes here can carry children under 20 lbs away.

Safety is something you have to work for and be conscious of i Jamaica. Don't do stupid things like walk around with exposed cash or jewelry. Leave the designer clothing at home and buy some plain tshirts at Walmart. Dress down, look regular and never disrepect people and you should be fine. When I say disrespect I mean if an ugly homeless drug addict asks you for some money don't make a horrid face and turn away. Thats disprespectful Instead a firm no thank you with the palm of you hand towards the person should be enough. Make a Jamaican friend and travel with them, you'll become accepted faster and treated better if you connect with the community instead of living apart from it.

Be on the inside because outsiders are the ones most often mistreated here. http://www.jamaicamax.com

Well, it's nice that you have decided for whatever reasons to relocate to Jamaica whether temporary or permanently.

Now on the issue of the safety, that to me is irrelevant and overrated. (not to be rude). But crime and security exist on many levels in various countries.
The thing about Jamaica with crimes are that it's a bit subjective. Murder for one are based more on gangs, reprisals and corruption. To be honest corruption exist on all level. My advise is find some trust worthy to get information. Find books to read. Don't trust any and anyone. Be very careful. You just don't get involved in anyone or any group that you suspect deals with any criminal activity.

you will be living in a very nice and safe town on the north coase so no need to worry,Please remember Jamaica is a tropical country so you will get certain types of bugs etc . Their are sprays you can get at our local super markets for all types of bugs and you can get your windows and doors fitted with insect screens.
