Where do I start?

I would like to relocate myself and my 4 year old twins to Jamaica. My mother has lived there the last 5 years and she has never met her grandchildren, hence I have not seen her in the 5 years since her return. I have come to the decision that I think it would be best for them and for me to move to Jamaica so she has this time with her grandchildre, my mother is ill and her health deteriorating. I have lived on the East Coast moved to the West now I am in the South, for some reason this move oversees is one I have had trouble wrapping my head around. I dont know where to begin? Do I sell everything I own here and save up enough money for a few months rent, find a job when I get there? I have 13 years Executive Assistant experience as well as 5 years in the restaurant and hotel business, I know I could find a job. What government papers do I need? Where will my children go to school? Will they have trouble understanding patois? Will I miss the US? I hope there is someone who has had these thoughts and overcame, if you are please share your experience with me. I know we need to go and we need to start making plans.

I have been writing on my blog for some time about my move home to Kingston Jamaica after living for 20 years in the US between New York, New Jersey and Florida.

I started writing a longer piece, which I have compiled into "The Top 10 1/2 Mistakes that People Make When Moving to Jamaica" based on my family's experience and that of my friends.

The basic idea is that the challenge is often underrated, and being prepared to be surprised ALL the time is key!

I take it that you will not be living with your mother since you stated that you need to sell everything to save up for rent until you find a job. First of all, where in Jamaica are you planning to move to. Finding a job in the Hotel Industry will be quite easy for you because of your experience and there are alot of Hotels being built. There are also plenty of good private school for your twins. If you are a citizen of the US then you can travel back and forth if you get home sick. From Miami or Ft. Lauderdale it's only about an hour and a half flight. I think you should first take a visit to see your mom before you decide to pack up and move. Stay a month or so to get your feet wet and in that time travel the island and see where you might want to relocate and enquire about jobs..
