I have just started planning the big move, although I have noticed that not many of you are moving to Kingston, I was drawn towards there because of the good schools, Campion, WSolmers, Immaculate etc. The job prospect is a bit daunting, I think that doing business is going to be the only option. I am giving myself 18 months, I hope this is realistic, I have 3 boys and 1 girl to place in to schools. Its nice to know I have company in making this big decision for the family

Congratulations and best wishes, I am planning my move to Jamaica from Orlando in August 2011 and I am so excited. I will be moving to Falmouth which is located in the parish of Trelawny. I plan on staying in Jamaica for no more than one year. The only problem is to find a school for my two children (11,12). I am afraid that they will be a little behind because the children in Jamaica seems to be more advance academically. I have to research finding maybe an international school.
Good luck with your move.

If your 12 year old is a girl, she might be able to get into Westwood High in Trelawny. It's a private all girls school.

My children are 11 and 12. I guess they would be ready for High School in Jamaica.

Thanks... my mom graduated from York Castle.

My next step is to find out if they lease cars. I will need a car for the year I plan on spending in Jamaica. I only plan on moving for one year but if things work out then I will consider living in Jamaica for a long time.

I am a certified event planner. I hope for the short time I plan on being there i will be able to get a few clients.

Do you guys meet on weekends for events such as beach parties etc.

I will be in St.Ann just a few minutes outside Ocho Rios and that's where I'll be setting up my business. I'm a Certified Bridal Consultant,a Nail Technician, Medical Biller & Coder n I'm in school full time getting my degree in Hospitality &Tourism Management(so I can work in the tourism/hotel industry when I move other than doing my own bridal n spa business). I have a house in Kingston that is on the market for sale but thinking of renting it out instead so if u r interesting let me know)

Wow, you are doing a lot. I found a place to rent in Retreat Height, trelawny which I heard is an exclusive community. It is small but I am sure my children and myself will make it work for one year. Ultimately they know we will return to our home in Orlando. This move is going to be an adventure for us. I have family in Ja but they are scattered all over the Island. My Uncles are professionals and they are pretty well known. I plan to keep myself focused on my project so that it will finish within the time frame I alloted. Do you have children and how old? Are you married and where are you moving from?

There is a lot going on in Trelawny due to the recent opening of the port. I purchased land approximately six years ago which I will build a guest house on. Do you have facebook? My facebook page is Cheryl Parkinson and my profile pic is a yacht.
You have young children. This will be an adventure for them. As you already know, the educational system in Ja surpasses the system in Florida. Your children will be at a great advantage by getting a solid Caribbean education. My cousins went to schools in kingston (Mona, St. Andrews and Campion). They all ended up passing the SAT's with extremely high scores which allowed them the privilege of attending University in the states on a scholarships. I am praying this adventure will work out for my children so that next year when we return they will be ahead of the children in their class. I also reside in FL but in Orlando.

Speak with you soon.

Hi everyone,
So I am recently back from an 'information gathering' visit to J.A.! I am planning to move with my husband and 4 children, they will by then be 11, 6, 5 and 3. I need to be near Kingston due to the likelihood of getting better jobs so have just been checking out schools. Initially I went out there to check out the international school but was not very impressed, the facilities are fantastic, in fact out of this world but I think my children will be the only black children in the class, coming from London where they are in the majority in class!) and I really wanted them to experience mixing with local children. checked out Hillel as they have very impressive results but again a bit of the same problem, am learning a lot about Jamaica's colour issues, brown, black, yellow etc. And seeing as that is something that i am trying to get away from (I am an educator in Inner London trying to raise 3 strong, confident, articulate black men) I do not want them having issue with their dark skin. I just want a classroom where they will have commonalities with the other children and I think I have found it. Campion School is a top performing school with children who are very proud of themselves and their school (i interviewed lots of them!) The work ethos was great, the general attitude was one of wanting to achieve and their manners was just exemplary. It will be a struggle to get in, but I figure I might as well start from the top and work my way down, there are lots of other government schools with similar approaches to education.
It was very interesting for me though as here , in London, to get this type of attitude on a mass scale like that you would have to pay a lot of money for a private education, but there, the private schools I felt you could buy your way into, but the top government schools were the ones that were the business for me. I am relocating primarily due to the schooling, (and the ouitside life, in I can get that in Kingston) so I want to make sure that i get it right.
Housing will be a bigger issue for me I think. I am looking for a modest house Barbican side, so if anyone has one, to buy or rent let me know.

I'm happy u got the chance to visit. Some other top rated school u might want to look into are Ardenne, Immaculate,Calabar,Kingston College(KC). Private schools it's all the $$$$$(well that is for the majority, some of the schools really care about u as an individual rather than your $$$$$$$).I had the opportunity of attending hs in Jamaica(private hs and those were the best years of my life). I was born in Jamaica, grew up between there n NY.My dad is British, so yes, I do understand what u r saying about the school system in London.Have u looked into living outside of Kingston, like on the North Coast?

Yes Trelawny is sure developing especially since Usain Bolt(the top Jamaican Athlete)is from that area. They have a newly built stadium and the hotels there r widely recognized.I'll go visit some schools when I go to Jamaica in a few weeks though they'll be on holiday but at least the outwards appearance will give me a feedback(negative or postive).I have found some good ones so far,my hus is leaning towards Mt. Alvernia Prep in Montego Bay but I'm not interesting inthe distance. Right now my daughter is at the top in her class and at the age of 8(she's going to 2nd grade in August) she's performing at a 4th grade level, so I'm looking something that will hold the same high standards. I sent u a friend request on facebook so accept and we could talk more.

I will be in Trelawny which is located near Montego Bay. I will not be in the Kingston area. Hopefully my children will be accepted in York Castle and Westwood.
Girl, I am a little nervous.... not knowing what to expect. People are just scaring me with all sort of stories. I always remain positive but the crime situation scares me. I just want this plan to work. I am single and this plan would be the best thing for my family. We need to leave Fl. due to all the unfairness. Did you register your event planning business? I have to start with mine so keep me abreast of your plans so we can network. It never hurts to network.
Speak with you soon.

I haven't registered my business there as yet. I had read up on it before but didn't pursue it since I don't have a date in mind as to when I'll be moving.I want to be finished with school first and I'm thinking about hitting a double major next semester so my career options are more wide. Why did u choose Trelawny though?

Hi Avie,

Does your husband or yourself have a job lined up in Jamaica? I have been contemplating for many years returning to Jamaica and I'm also thinking about living in Kingston. I've also thought about St Ann and St Elizabeth. My niece's friend moved back to Jamaica about 3 years ago and opened a Chicken Farm and is doing exceptionally well. That is one of the businesses that I've considered getting into. I would like to keep in touch with each of you as you go through your journey of relocating to Jamaica.

Hi Avie,
There are several good public schools in Kingston so Private is not the only option. Check out KC( 2 of my children went there) Calabar, and Immaculate ( my other 2 children attended)
I would also advise you to rent before you buy so you become comfortable with a location. Once you buy it is hard to sell.

God Bless.

Rob

Avie-just to add to what RobV said-my nephew went to KC and it's a prominent school. Also Ardenne, Wolmer's Boys and Wolmer's Girls, and Calabar.

Avie, I just read your post and must agree with your interpretation of the international schools. I never realise it until I read it and I think its because all my Kids grew up here in Jamaica so the intended goals are somewhat different. We both agree thou that the facilities are superb
