I am new to this forum!
I am looking for any advice on making my transition into JA an easier one!
I will be marrying a citizen of JA in Oct 2011, hoping to move in December 2011.
Does anyone know what rights I have to stay in JA? (I also have an 8 yr old) The airlines require that you have a return flight, or is it immigration that requires that.
I will also be opening a business sometime in the new year. Do I require a visa or something to do so. I am so clueless in this process. (I will be married at this point)
Also these questions came to mind:
Has anyone gone through getting there drivers licence - I will have 3 months to do so.
Can I keep my Canadian drivers licence and renew each year? Can I keep these Canadian ties, such as a bank account?
I very much appreicate any help that anyone has, or experiences that they want to share.
;)

Hi Rolo
As soon as you marry the Jamaican you will automatically qualify for full status. By this I mean work permits, your ability to register & open your business etc

Hi Rolo
As far as I am aware, you will need your itinerary to state a return flight for passing through immigration at the airport in Jamaica. As you will be married to a Jamaican you can apply for residence in Jamaica by submitting the required documentation at offices in Kingston or Mobay. Or better still, phone the Jamaica High Commission in Canada and see if it can be sorted before you leave.
As far as I am aware, though please correct me anyone if I am wrong, the granting of permanent residency does not automatically state the right to work so a work permit may still be required
I have no knowledge re Canadian drivers licence. I have not had to deal with such matters I just use my drivers licence from UK.
There are Scotia Banks in Jamaica, so you should be able to keep some ties in this regard.

Thanks RayJay,
This looks correct to me. I ended up talking to the PICA office in JA after this post and the officer said that I would need to apply/renew for all of these things every three months until the citizenship came through..she said a minimum of 18 months...the site said 12..but whos counting right!
Thanks for the info, I have gathered MOST of the nessesary documents that I need to apply for citizenship, printed and completed most paperwork..im hoping this will get the process on the go when i visit in October.
Thanks everyone.

In Jamaica the banks that have ties to Canada are Scotia Bank and Jamaica National so you should be ok. As far as opening a business you will need permit/license to do so.

I had guessed that, although I went to send a money transfer through to those 2 exact banks and they do not do this. I had to send it as a money transfer, otherwise I am told it takes a minimum of 30 days to cash the funds. Just in case anyone was wondering!
Thanks for the info, as well a local friend of mine told me that eh RBTT is going to be the RBC...it will take some time I heard, but something to look into in the future if anyone does business through RBC.
Thanks for your reply lala718!
So for the permit/license I am assuming I need to be a citizen or have a working visa or residence of some sort?
;)

Hi Rolo,
Another way of sending funds is between your own two accounts. I transfer to from one to the other and physically withdraw the monies from the cash points in JA. I find that the costs are somewhat smaller that moneygram and western union. Hope thats clear...?

Yes I did get your message and responded. I am gather it didn't reach!
I will try and reply again.
I will have to check things out when I am down in a couple of months.
the dual bank account idea would be a great way to transfer the funds. thanks!
So besides the citizenship paperwork which they have told me will take around 18-20 months for myself..my daughter will take 2yrs and a bit after that. I find this a bit lengthy..but oh well!
I am wondering if anyone has any ties or links for places to rent in Savanna-la-Mar? That's in the Westmoreland, Negril area. I have been googling and networking like crazy to find either an agency or person who has a place to rent.
In kingston we were going to rent/lease a place for 420/month CAD and that was a brand new build, 2 bed home.
I am not looking for much, 2 bed and a couple other things.
If anyone has insight on this please let me know!
Thanks again for everyone's help!

Where are you from in Canada? I'm also moving to Jamaica. My fiance is Jamaican from Newell, St Elizabeth. We have built our house there. It would be nice to keep in touch with a fellow Canadian...

Hi I live near Cambridge now and I'm moving to Newell, St Elizabeth and marrying a Jamaican. Once you marry I'm almost certain you can work/open a business without issue. This is a very helpful website www.jamaica.gov.jm also for your actual move and what you can ship this site is really helpful. www.jacustoms.gov.jm

That's a very helpful website. I'd say ship the necessities especially if u have kids, try to ship what they need, n don't forget to stock up on mosquito creams.
