hello :) i am a black american woman and my friend and I are planning a move to jamaica later this year. This is my first forum post so i really was just hoping to get general information about the process of immigration. I was also hoping to connect with people in Jamaica or who know the island well enough to help me and my friend with this transition. Look forward to future posts by me. i want to network and chat with other people (either expats or natives) to make this as communal and beautiful as possible. :) :) :) :)

Hi, Congrats on the decision to move to JA! I just returned from a 2 week prep trip. I am moving late August to the Mona area as I need to be near UWI for research. One bit of advise is to start early in your housing and job search. I've been in prep mode for some time and am learning that admin stuff takes quite a bit of time and patience. (Ex. Even with all documentation it took 2.5 hours to get and open bank account). Further while Jamaicans a lovely people customer service is markedly different than it is further North.
Looking forward to the move and sharing experiences. Further VERY interested in meeting and greeting members of this Expat community. Hope to host a lunch once I arrive.
Best of luck with preparations!
Kind regards, JA Bound

I am an American who moved to Jamaica almost 3 years ago. You need to start your research early and realize that some of the information you receive is not accurate. The hardest part of my move was the work permit - I had a job, but the first year I applied for the permit it took me almost 1 year to fight through all the paperwork and near impossible process. If you do not need to work, as a non-resident you are granted stay as a tourist for 3 months and you can apply for one 3 month extension. If you are planning on staying her permanent, you need to make plans as to how you are going to stay here
