We frequently visit JA. We have a home in May Pen and plan in a few years to move. As it is we go 1 or 2 times a year. My problem is mosquitos dem love me like KFC. No joke. Once the sun set I have to run for cover. A ten day stay gets me aprox 60-90 bites many blister over very bad and big like the size of a quarter. I try everything to keep them off. DEET deep woods off is the best but it stinks and my doctor warns its not good long term. I found tuna/aloe plant releaves the itch along with the salt water . But anything to keep them away?

Try garlic capsules, read mosquitoes don't like the taste. Mosquitoes are attracted by the smell of hosts blood type. I to be come a feast for mosquitoes. Also try Vicks vapours. Look on natural websites for information. I actually rubbed candle wax with the ingredients of citronella, need, lemongrass, lavender, eucalyptus, and tea tree. This candle is Blue Mountain Aromatics, made in Jamaica. This actually gave me a mosquito bite free night ,for one of the nights I was in Jamaica.

Sounds interesting. I have not heard of garlic capsules. Vicks vapour rub sounds interesting too. I will do some research and get back on this. Will try here in Canada as summer is almost here.

Have you tried REPEL? It is plant based lemon eucalyptus and deet free. It has a very strong smell, but works better than anything else I have tried. I bought mine through Amazon.

Thank you for the suggestion.. I'm desperate to try anything. As I can't imagine what it will be like for me when we move to JA. REPEL sounds familiar I think I have seen it somewhere and will look into it. In Canada mosquitos still like me. Bites swell like a dime but don't get infected. Skin so Soft works pretty good and Off. This summer I'm experimenting with Vitamin B pills.. With fingers crossed Thanks Isme888.

I too am an all you can eat buffet for mosquitos for the first two weeks I am here, after that they tend to leave me aloneish. Once you're eating Jamaican foods and are acclimatised I hope the same will apply to you!

Thank you for the advice. We eat 70?Jamaican recipes but the ingredients are from everywhere in Canada. The longest I have stayed is 1 month = 150 mosquito bites with off repelent on every day. So far vitamin B is doing good in Canada (take 2 a day.) also trying to increase my garlic intake. I hope something works so I may move in peace. Already have screens put aside in JA for our windows when we move.

Oh wow! I've only experience tons of bites in Portmore & learned that they only come out during a certain time of night, for a certain period. Lol. It's so weird. My friends made some "repellent" with lemongrass oil. It calmed them down while sitting on the veranda, as well has having a fan blow on us. Although I'm not Jamaican, they didn't bother me as much as they did my friend (who is also American). I'd love to know what "cure" you find. Will you please let us know what ends up working for you?
Thanks in advance.

So sorry that everyone seems to be having a hard time with the mosquitoes. I invest in a few bottle of "Avon Skin so Soft " There is always some in my luggage, it never fails. Just rub it on the areas of your body that is exposed. You will thank me. ,

I have used Avon Skin so Soft and have found it to be pretty effective. However, Avon now make a specific mosquito repellent as part of it's SSS range, and I also found that works good. And it has a nice smell - well, I think so, anyway!

Hi everyone I'm posting a reply to my own question on Mosquito bites as I just came back from 3 wks in Clarendon and have tried a few things: First a few days before goung to JA I started taking Garlic pills 1000mg ×2 or 3 along wirh. vitimin B 1000mg ×3 day and continued throughout my stay, its not toxic as your body sweats out the excess and this is what the mosqiroes don't like- the smell it turns them off. (My husband assured me I didnt smell bad to him ) Along with this I tried the skin so soft from Avon as was suggested in the evenings & together it work within 80%.. I got 35 bites and only 9 swelled and 6 ouzzed. For me Fantastic! I applied fresh aloe for the itch along with polysporen to the bad bites. But my miracle itch relief and healing cure is the Salt Water we went to Ochi, Salt River & Hellshire on day trips & got a jug of water each time. The salt is a wonder for healing. Just dip a cloth and apply. (Still slept with a net) Hope this helps someone else.
