A number of people here have advised against bringing your furniture and household stuff to Jamaica... because of high and arbitrary duties charged, Would this apply also to "returning Jamaicans" who get exceptions? I would love to hear about people's experiences in this regard.

No, that doesn't apply to returning residents. Just make sure you have all the required documents to qualify as a returning resident.

Hello, I have the same requirement to ship my household stuff from Singapore to Jamaica. Do you have this need also?

I am deciding whether to ship my stuff or buy new stuff locally. I am told that a shipping a 20 or 40 foot container will cost me around $5000 US, and duties are in addition. Jamaica customs has provided a list (also online) of a limited and defined set of things that can come in duty free.
I would be interested to hear about people's experiences in how strictly these rules are applied (e.g. if I substitute an additional night table for a sofa end table; or if I bring in 7 lamps instead of 4 etc.). I am also interested in how they treat the bringing of tools of one's trade.

Janni, if you are a returning resident about to stay in Jamaica permanently, perhaps it might pay to invest in the container. Suffice it to say, this move is going to cost you a small fortune because much of the duties are at the whim of the customs officer and good luck with that. I furnished a 2 bedroom house in 1996 when the Courtleigh Hotel on Trafalgar Road closed. Was it elegant and breathtaking? Of course not, but it was economical and it served the purpose. You can find much Merchandise for Sale in the Gleaner. Many expats are always leaving and many people simply migrate away from Jamaica and sell their possessions. You can pick up much of what you need that way. it's a possibility that you shouldn't rule out. Good Luck.

I looked at the Gleaner, and this does seem to be a possible approach. I assume most stuff is located in Kingston, while I am in Montego Bay, so that poses some problem.... I haven't made my decision about whether to ship the container.

But Montego Bay is a big metropolitan area also. There would have to be some people selling merchandise.

Check with the Jamaican embassy's website in your country, or call them. I shipped all my things over from Europe in 2011.

Btw, if you are a couple, and you are shipping things home as a returning resident, put it in only one person's name. Just in case you want to do it again, a few years later. As far as I am aware, you can do a second shipment within 6 months of the first one. I don't know if that has changed.
