Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum however I've been a active viewer for quite some time now :) I finally decided to make an account to connect!
I'm Canadian born and live in Toronto, however I travel to Jamaica often for vacations . ( Both my parents are Jamaican born ) I currently work as a nurse and love my job!
My question is, lately I've been thinking about the nursing field in Jamaica (preferably Kingston) how's the pay rate ? is it high demand? Are any facilities currently hiring? Also, what would the legal process be of working as a nurse in Jamaica being a Canadian citizen ? Thanks
Shaneka

Hi Nurseshan, welcome to the forum!
I can tell you what I know via a US nurse already there trying to work in her field. Pay for a nurse in a private doctor's clinic is approx. US $20-25/day.
Have you ever been inside a hospital in Ja? I visited someone in Kingston Public Hospital >}shudder{<. The private hospitals are better, but I also visited someone at Mobay Hope (since replaced by Hospiten) and it was still a far cry from first world facility.
The lab (next to private doctor's clinic) where I go for tests provides a half-bandaid to cover the needle hole, not sterile at all. (note to self: take my own)
I know a Ja'n trained as what US calls 'certified nursing assistant', pay at an old folks' home is JMD $30,000/month.
Read the Jamaica Observer and Jamaica Gleaner newspapers online. Search Nurses, search Hospital, etc. and read the articles that come up.
A few years ago there was an expose' on biopsies being stored on-site (un-refrigerated) instead of being sent to laboratories.
Currently there is an expose' on dead babies - children under age of 2 who have caught infections, perhaps at the hospitals.
I think there was something in the news this year about nurse protests, I don't recall if it was over pay, supplies or something else.

Thanks LoriB! I will look into it. Another thing, both my parents are Jamaican, what are the legal requirements for me to work in Jamaica as a nurse ?

Easiest route may be if you apply for Citizenship based on your parents.

As your parents are Jamaican born the easiest route would be application for unconditional landing - a more straight forward process and you can apply at the PICA office in Mobay or Kingston. Once received you can live and/or work in Jamaica as much as you like.
