Hello everybody, my name is Steffannie and am 32, currently living in the Netherlands where I was born and raised. I am new to this forum.

I went to Jamaica in 2001 with my parents and came back this year for backpacking. This time I've met somebody. So I went back last august to spend some more time together. Now he has applied for his Dutch visa but it's a very stressfull thing, because it's hard to get even for a short stay.

So as I am currently looking for a job (in Holland) I was thinking, why shouldn't I try it for a while in Jamaica , even if it's for a couple of months. The thing is, the last time I stayed over I kinda figured Jamaica isn't the easy country that tourists get to see (corruption / financially etc). But I could manage a couple of months coming over, but the thing is I would need a job over there to maintain a living.

My man lives in Kingston, Id personally rather go to Ochi or somewhere along the northcoast but as I'm trying to see the possibilities it doesn't matter for now where exactly.

Could somebody give me some advice on how to network in Jamaica from overseas? Or give me some links to search for jobs specifically in Jamaica for foreigners? Maybe some international companies that I could try?

I found something from the peace corps , but you have to be an US citizen. And there are alot of dutch exchange programms for jobs but not in Jamaica. At least not that I know of anyway.

I obviously don't have a working permit right now for Jamaica . Next to that I understand 75% of the patois, as long as they speak slowly. And we all know that's something that they don't do when they are excited or angry and want to tell you something.

I've completed studies in Tourism and Multimedia & Communication. My last job (6,5 year) was as a coördinator in the health care (for domestic help at elderly people houses)

Hopefully this is the right place to post something for a question like this!

thank you :)

Here we go again. Steffanie, I'm sure you're a lovely person,as is your current love interest. You are from a highly developed Western country. Jamaica is a developing nation. You are not, repeat, NOT going to "find a job" in Jamaica. First of all, the Ministry of Labor is not going to give you a work permit. The best thing you can hope for is go on vacations, save your money perhaps for a lengthy stay, and take it from there. I'm surprised it's hard to get the visa to the Netherlands. I thought it was easier for Jamaicans than Canada or the USA (virtually impossible). Good luck.

Thank you Gardis for your quick response. I'm quite aware of the country differences and that it's hard to get a job in Jamaica. But I'm just researching the possibilities as it IS very hard to get a Schengenvisa (which is for 26 countries in europe) esp with all the refugees entering the country at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we can provide a place to stay but it is making things harder right now to enter the country. We've been working on this visa thing for 4 months by now and we probably will hear it by the end of december. And there's still a chance that he might not get it. And this is just for a 4 week stay.

So you might now understand my reasons for this search as i can easily travel to JA (at least for 2x 3 months a year), but not work. And I really don't need to make money as in Dutch standards, just as long as I can maintain my living for a while as I know things are expensive in JA. Hope to find some other solutions.

I appreciate that you took time to answer my post.

Hello & Welcome Steffanie!

I have to agree with Gardis, unless you find something "under-the-table " or start your own business it'll be almost impossible to find a job here. I wish you all the best.

Nice to hear from you. I watched a program on VICE channel (here in USA) and it concerned a Jamaican woman (lesbian) who got shot and was desperate to leave Jamaica. She was refused by the US Embassy, Canadians and British. Long story short, she flew to Turkey, which does not require a visa from Jamaica, and thence flew to Amsterdam where she promptly applied for asylum, and received it. I don't know if this approach would work for your friend. Not that he's looking to apply for asylum but that's one way out albeit circuitous.

Thanks for the advise. I guess there might be other options like that but in the end if he wants to travel to the netherlands he has to have a legal stay permit. Anyways just wanted to check out the most common options first, My country and his.

Thank you RickBlaine!
We'll see what happens, it would be so much easier to surch for information (Also other than work) locally instead of overseas. Thats why id like to get in touch with people who have been in the same position like me. So i am glad to have found this forum!

Gardis and RickBlaine,

I'm bigly impressed with your restraint in answering this email, all the while giving whatever answers you're able to.

I'm just wondering why the 'boyfriend' isn't doing his own research towards getting his girlfriend a permit or job in JA. Not my business, I guess.

Good luck to the OP though.

Well Cessj , the 'boyfriend' that you 'nicely' refer to is helping out . I just like to prepare for myself as well and he has no experience as an expat so it isn't so weird in my opinion to ask other people for information that might have been in the same situation
