Immigration Requirements for Starting Up a Business in Jamaica

Hello everyone,

My name is Tari. I am a British citizen looking to migrate to Jamaica mid to late 2017. I have been reading up on immigration requirements on the PICA website as I would like to start my own business over there. It is not quite clear to me as to how I can formalise my stay once I am over there. I have visited the country a number of times now and am familiar with the fact that I can remain in the country for a period of 90 days as a visitor with the option to extend my visitor stay.

Any hints and tips you could give me on how to formalise my stay as a business owner would be much appreciated. I intend to move over and live on the island indefinitely. My partner is Jamaican however we will only be looking to get married in a couple of years time so I am not looking to obtain a marriage exemption certificate immediately.

Many thanks!

Tari

Hi, its a convoluted process, many steps, fees to pay, documents to get certified, etc. I was never clear how one would get a business started at the same time as having restrictions on length of stay.

I had acquired a How To Start A Business manual from one of the Labour offices, it was about $2,500 jmd. That was helpful, although some of the processes may have changed.

Look up the business registration website, sorry I do not know the addy. If no one else knows just do some searching on your own, you will find them. There is naming a business, registering a business, getting taxpayer registration, etc.

You may have to go back and forth to your home country a couple times. When they require certified documents, they will expire after 6 months. Be prepared with at least 3 copies of everything. Things may not always be efficient or logical.

Make sure you have a real money-making business or you will be doing the monthly and annual run-around and paying fees and taxes just to stay in the country.

After looking into it I decided coming and going was a better option for me, until/unless something else came up.

Hi Lori,

Thank you so much for your prompt response and for providing some insight into the process for getting set up over there. I didn't think migrating was going to be an easy ride but it sounds like it will be strenuous trying to get myself sorted out. I will take a look at the business registration site you mentioned and will get a copy of the How To Start A Business Manual the next time I am in the country.

So going back to my initial question, how do I formalise my stay? Is it a case of applying for a work permit once I have registered the business and satisfied all of the requirements that go along with that process?

Many thanks,

Tari
