" Hi Bob, Like elsewhere, COLAs and other expat items in Tokyo are driven by industry and job function. I believe that there are cost of goods indexes out there for Tokyo, but I would say that the most costly parts of living in Tokyo are housing and food. Education is also a huge expense (expect $25,000/kid/yr for international school tuition). In terms of resources, I would try to find someone in your company that has preceded you. In a pinch you could try a headhunter or even the expat services section of a big five firm (this is how I nailed down the taxation question). Shibuya is a nice place to work and there are great housing oppotunities a short trip away (though the area is one of Tokyo''s priciest). If I can answer anything more specific, let me know. Rich "
