" Hi, I have recently arrived in Tokyo on secondment from the UK and expect to stay for around 2 years. My girlfriend has accompanied me and while my company has been very helpful in accomodating her they are unable to provide her with a visa. In order to stay for the length of time we expect to be here, I assume she will either have to find some work (and then get a company-sponsored visa) or to enroll as a student. I would be very interested to hear from or speak with anyone who has been (or knows someone) in a similar situation. I’m particularly interested in hearing what options may be available to us and what difficulties other people have encountered. Dan "

" Hi Dan, Reading your message has given me a bit of a scare, as I will be in a similar situation as your girlfriend. My (english) boyfriend has also moved to Tokyo recently and I will follow him sometime beginning next year, in the hope to find myself a job. I know it''s very difficult to obtain a work visa as you will need to have a sponsored company before hand you is willing to employ you, but to obtain a general visa as a partner is possible. The only thing you have to do is to try to obtain a certificate of eligibility issued from the Japanese government of justice in which you explain who your partner is and stating that you are guaranteed for her. She, then, has to go with this certificate to the Japanese embassy in the UK in order to obtain a visa. This is what I have to do in Holland, guess it will be same for UK. I very much appreciate that it''s very difficult to find a job or even to get a visa as a partner of an expat, but unfortunately most companies usually forget there are working & unmarried partners who are willing to accompany their partner abroad. Would appreciate if you could send me an e mail to keep me posted on your findings. Best regards, Natasja "
