During a trip to Japan in April I found myself really enjoying the country, and it got me thinking about living there for a little while. Is there an option for living and working there for a short time if I don't have a college degree? What about just living there, and not working? Are these outrageous questions to even ask?

Hi. It is very easy to find work in Japan as an English teacher. No English degree required. The emphasis is working with someone who can help locals learn good pronunciation for school and business conversation. Google English teaching jobs in Japan and you'll find many. Good luck. My forum name is the Japanese word for Smith, by the way. Good luck!

Not sure what you mean by 'contacts'. For a visa you need a sponsor. The category depends upon you're qualifications and intent e.g. work, study, or marriage. If want to browse try the Embassy of Japan in D.C. Good site. If you need professional logistics/visa support and have the budget for it we'd be happy to help. If you're backpacking to Japan on a limited budget most travelers make a plan, hop a plane, and figure it out as they go. That's the fun of it.

I am currently looking to move to Japan in 2011, is it a silly question to ask how muck Japanese I need to know?

Hello, I'm hoping to experience Japan for a year or more hopefully, however I only have an associates degree. I read about the Visas in Japan and apparently without a bachelors I cannot apply for a working visa. So even being sponsored by a company would do me no good. I don't plan to marry anytime soon, and i don't have any Japanese cultural activity experience for the cultural visa. United States doesn't allow for Working-Holiday Visa, and don't seem likely to even get tourist extensions. What am I to do? Spend 2-3 years and another 30-60 grand to get a bachelors before I can even go to Japan for more than 90 days?? I'm 28, a hard worker, and just got laid off of a great company i'd been working at for the last 6 years; please tell me there's something I can do. :(

You can teach without a Bachelor's degree. You can get visa sponsorship without a Bachelor's.

Google it!
