I will be working and living in Jordan for the next few years full-time and so I will need to bring all my household belongings with me.

What are the laws regarding bringing in used items into the country? Will I have to pay duty on them?

Fremont,

The following are the exemptions on duties:

Personal items and used household goods are exempt if:

1) You are part of a diplomatic or consular mission

2) You are Jordanian returning to live in Jordan

If neither of the above factors apply to your circumstances, then yes, customs duties WILL be imposed, with the exception of clothing, toiletries and books.
