I am a 25 year old Australian and am considering moving to Jordan. My boyfriend has a job starting in August and is wanting me to move with him. I have hesitations as i have heard various stories about couples living together out of wed lock? I aslo don't have a job lined up, how hard is it to find work? Any advice comments?

Hi,
First, about living together - that's a tough one. It is socially unacceptable to live with a bf/gf here, but on the other hand, you aren't going to run into problems with the authorities, either.
If you do come, I would recommend not broadcasting your unmarried status to Jordanians; they will automatically assume that you ARE married.
About a job, it's hard to say without knowing anything about your background. It will be more difficult to find a job if you can't speak Arabic, but not impossible.
Here are a couple of job search websites that you can take a look at:
www.akhtaboot.com
www.bayt.com
Best of luck to you!

Hi ,
Whats your job profile and previous experience ?
You would need to get a separate work permit and cant go on your boy friend's visa as a dependent.
Can you give more details?

Hello there. Moving from one place to another usually carries within it new experiences that could be positive, negative, or a mix of both, but we shouldn't allow any barriers to interfer with our plans and endeavors. Jordan is a safe and nice country and most people can speak English with varying proficiencies. Being a girlfriened for someone wouldn't be a big deal in some parts of Amman (i.e., Western Amman), but at the same time; it will be better not to reveal the exact nature of the relationship to others and usually no one will get into such details. I really would like to have a gf myself and hope that some pretty girl will dare to let me know! Job wise, I advise to contact your embasy in Amman. You can "google" it and sure you'll find its website in Amman. Keep your fingers crossed and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or if you and your bf need assistance when you arrive to Jordan. Best, Omar PS/ you can or anyone else email me at: taquamenon@yahoo.com
