Sufficient Salary for Amman?

I have a Skype interview next week with an English language school in Amman. I've applied to be an ESL teacher there.

Salary is one of the items to be discussed, but I'm at a loss of what to ask for. What is a sufficient monthly salary for living in Amman? What do English teachers make there?

Hi jftrumm, I live in Aqaba, which is the Southern port city of Jordan. Aqaba is a special economic zone here in Jordan and we don't pay taxes unlike in Amman. So, in Aqaba a typical salary for teaching English would be about 350-500JD per month. I don't know if Amman compensates for paying taxes but it would not be a lot. I would discuss who pays for the work permit / residency. That is a pretty hefty fee and a lot of paperwork. Normally the employer would pay for and process all of that for you.
