Life in Almaty

Hi all. I have recently accepted an offer to work and live in Almaty and have certain reservations. I am a single 32 year old male american, currently living in London. If anyone can give me some perspective on the scene (ie. social life, night life, safety, cost of living, outdoor activities etc etc), I would very much appreciate it. Also, any suggestions on where to live would be helpful!

Almaty is a great but expensive place. The outdoor life is wondeful, spectacular mountains 25 mins from the city. Walking, skiing 3 resorts, cross country skiing several places. Good fishing and generally a lot of lovely open space. Rents are expensive 4,000 us a month for a 2 bed apartment in a nice place. Food and drink and eating out all considerably more than Europe. As is the internet and eveything I can think of. Lots of Expats lots of bars. The local people are pretty sophisticated and very attractive, lots of people speak some English. The worsed aspect is the traffic which is very congested and the driving is a nighmare as is crossing the road. Look on www.youtube Almaty crashes.
I like the climate but because Almaty is in a bowl the pollution is bad and getting worse as more cars come on the roads. Over all most people like it here.

I just moved here and am amazed at the cost of living given the lack of amenities. Health club-ranges from $20 to swim an hour and up. Head of cabbage-$4.00. Typical grocery bill for a single is 100 a week. Eating out is expensive. They ticket yellow tagged cars ...rather repeatedly get bribes for no traffic error if you are an expat. The air is polluted so you can only see the mountains in the spring and fall...convection pressure keeps the pollution in the city other times. I have lived in isolated places but they usually are not this pricey. HOpe you got a supplmental income as I did not get it for hardship situation....I am looking for new work and will stay only if I don't like the new offers.
