I'm back in Almaty after a year in Astana. Looking for a flat, perferably on the north side. I'm looking in the $2000 and under, but see that there are not many choices.

Can anyone pass a feww tips my way about finding a secure apt.

The most safe way is the agency. But good landlords possiable to find as well. The land lord can be flexible, so from time to time you can make lower your payment for the flat. There is a flat on the Al-Farabi str. nice and new.At this moment I have a free time so I can assist you. My e-mail: expat2009@hotmail.com or Mobile 777 3 790 333 and my name is Elvira.

Hi, hope you have already found your new place. If not, I can suggest contacting the US consulate in Almaty, which publishes a bi-weekly letter, containing various classifieds, including rentals. What are your apt's preferences? If it is "safe, clean, centrally located, and remodeled with updated appliances", you'll have plenty of choices. If it is "Class A, recently built, posh and grand", then you are looking at $2500 and above for monthly rent. I wouldn't use agency, since they add a premium. Instead, I would suggest using the help of a local friend, if you have one, who would be able to negotiate a cheaper rate for you (if a landlord sees a foreigner, rent automatically goes up by about 30%). If you need assisstance with that, let me know at humphreykz@yahoo.com. I am a US citizen but look and sound local, so I have been helping with rent negotiations for some of my friends in Almaty before. Good luck!
