Dear all,
I will come to Almaty in June for a three months period, doing an internship at Air Astana.
I already read a lot about KZ and the city and I know that it is pretty expensive. However, I am looking right now for a room to rent for 3 months. It is not supposed to be on the upper edge of available rooms, but it should have some western standards and it must be safe (meaning the surrounding AND the physical building).
If anyone could help me, I would be really happy and thankful. If anyone has a spare room or something like this, that would be perfect.
Thanks in advance and best regards from Germany,
JWK

Hi,
I have just moved to Almaty and already noticed that it is more expensive than Europe - at least food in the supermarkets is anyway! I am afraid I cannot give you advice on getting accommodation, but if you do end up here and want to get in contact with a expat let me know! :)

To get food for a little less you should try the Green Bazaar for vegetables and meat. I've also found that a market called Small on Mendekulova near the Ramstore in Samal-2 has good prices on grocery items. You can also try getting bulk items at Magnum on Abai corner Momyshuly, the prices are decent.

For me it was easy as I work for an international company, therefore it was an internal job move for me. I think finding work here on your own would be much harder. Good luck anyway and maybe see you here in Almaty if you are lucky enough to find something!

Thanks for the advice. My work colleagues already recommended the Green Bazaar, but I will try your other recommendations too. Let me know if you have any other tips for living here as I have only recently arrived!
