Firstly, welcome to our community. I have lived and worked in Uralsk at said school for 3 years, so somewhat a veteran.
Bus, 60 tt (under 20 US cents) no matter how far you travel. Buses come every 5 minutes, depending where you want to go. But Taxi's are cheap and quite easy to catch (now they are on whatsapp) I catch a taxi most morning and it costs 300tt (@90 US cents) distance approx 3.5 k.
Weather - when you arrive in August it should still be quite hot, around 27c. But the weather changes quite quickly, moving up and down 10 -15 degrees within days, so by the end of September its fairly cool, and by December we are into the minus'. The weather in the depth of winter is bloody cold outside, but everything is double glazed and insulated, and heating is supplied to every home, so you are never cold inside. Things to bring - sheets for a double bed. The sheets here are thin and cheap, but very expensive so your landlord will only get cheap sheets that probably won't fit your bed.
Coat - buy it here. They are not really that expensive and they are suited to the weather.
Living here is quite cheap, but during winter, eating is carbs and protein - not really much choice in vegetables. (potato, onion, carrot, cabbage)
You are arriving into a much smaller team this year, but we do enjoy having the occasional night out!

We have only 8.3 weeks to go here before the break, so you will be here before you know it.

I agree with the other reply, taxis are almost free in Uralsk, the bus journeys can be a bit tough when the weather gets warmer. The weather is only harsh if you are an old lady or a new born baby.

Greetings fellow teachers!
I'm also moving to Uralsk to teach physics and mathematics.

My big concern is banking - I have a mortgage. How long after I arrive and start working will I be able to start to transfer money to the States?
