We have a confrence to attend in Nairobi the first week of November and will be in town for a week. I am trying to find out some business and fun information.

Business

What paper(s) does the expat community read?

What radio (s) station does the expat community listen to?

What are some of the good resturants? What type of food do they serve (Looking for a good mix of local and international)?

Fun:
Are there any expat activities that go on during the week or weekend?

Where are good places to go on the weekend in Nairobi or other areas of the country?

Good places to shop and visit in Nairobi?

General

What are good rules to follow to have a safe trip?

I would like to Thank you for you assistance?

Decan,
This is Edith from Kenya. You are mostly welcome to Kenya.
The following are answers to questions you asked:

BUSINESS:Community expat can get news paper from New Stanely Hotel, in the city center.

RADIO: Most radio stations are in English language so expats can listen to our local music and international music as they play both. They can also try to tune in to BBC.
They can also watch CNN from T.V which brings world wide news.

FUN
Weekend is full of life. You can check where the fun is in our daily local news papers and on Fridays Morning to get prepared where to go on Friday night(members day) as they call it.
On Wednesdays at CARNIVORES is ROCK NIGHT and KENYAN NIGHT at K2 and many more other places. On places to go for fun is always good to have a local to guide you all through.
SHOPPING:
There are so many super markets where you can shop all types of any shopping.
SITE SEEING:
Around Nairobi you can visit meseum, snake park and National park. BUT there are so many site seeing all over the country and good places to visit not forgeting a visit to Mombasa.
GENERAL:
It is always good to have a local person to guide you on where to step and where not to step. And to be able to have full fun in a limited time is better to have someone organize for your everything for you.
RULES TO FOLLOW:
Check the latest Kenya profile and warnings and follow the guiding planet.
When in Kenya feel free to contact me on +245(0)722 255 311(mobile) talk to Edith if you need any assistance.
WISH YOU ALL HAPPINESS IN KENYA. FEEL WELCOME

Decan,

Nairobi is a big city, and I'm sure your co-attendees will know things to do. As an expat living in Kenya, here are the MUST-DOs that you would be remiss to leave without doing.

Carnivore - all-you-can-eat meat restraunt, focusing on game meat
Giraffe Park - feed giraffe with your hands
Nairobi Game Park - at least the petting zoo - pet a cheeta
Eating (and shopping) at Diamond Plaza (Indian)
Maasai Market - shopping at Village Market on Fridays
Drinking Kenyan beverages, such as coffee and chai (tea)
Buying a snack at a roadside duka (kiosk)
Read the Daily Nation newspaper

Depending on your interests, you may consider:
-visiting an orphange
-attending a religious worship service
-looking at the slums - be safety-cautious
-riding a matatu - you might want to go with a Kenya friend
The big stuff:
-taking a three day trip to Maasai Mara ($500)
-rafting the Nile in Uganda
-visiting the Kenya coast - Diani Beach
-visit Lamu
-climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania ($1000)

There are no western restraunts, although there are a few South African fast-food places. The expat restraunts include Java House (psuedo-American), Tamambo, Spurs, Mediterranio. Village Market is the food court. The main expat shopping areas are Villiage Market, Sarit Centre, ABC Place, The Junction, and Adam's Arcade. Nakumatt is a good all-around store (wannabe Wal-Mart).

The best book is Lonely Planet. If you're serious, read it.
