I am moving to Kenya for 10 months to study arachnids for my Master's. I will travel all over southern Kenya and spend a good deal of time in Nairobi working with the Museum. I'm going to need a 4wd vehicle, that will be my traveling lab. I will try to sell it when I leave.

I will arrive neext September but want to start researching this aspect now. Any ideas? I guess I'm looking for price ranges. I'm a young woman and prefer to have my own transportation rather than rely on others. I spent time in Kenya in 2003 and loved it and am looking forward to my researchand outreach with Kenyan schoolchildren.

Anything will help! Asante!

Hi,
This is Edith from Kenya.
4WD: About this isssue you need a Toyota Prado Land cruicer a desel or Petrol Engine OR Mitshubish Pajero.
BUYING: You can buy these vehicles from local markets but its going to be expensive. It will cost about Ksh.2.8 and 2.5millions to import direct from Japan. There are several companies or persons who can import the vihicles for you or you can do it while in Kenya. To import such a car you need about 2-3 mmonths and if you really need this car upon arrival we can send you photos of such vehicles in our markets. When you have identified one is a matter of paying on your arrival and getting the car.
These two types will be easier for you to dispose them when time comes for you to leave.
Edith

Having driven extensively in East Africa and having managed a vehicle fleet for a NGO based in Kenya, I offer these comments.

Questions to ask yourself:
Will I have passengers and if so, how many?
How much cargo will I carry?
Do I have back/neck problems?
Would I prefer automatic or manual transmission?
What is my budget?

I would suggest the Toyota line of products as both parts and mechanics are both readily available. One of the first two would be my pick. Theyre rugged, yet comfortable and hold their value well. I assume you're looking for a used (second-hand) vehicle imported from Japan (ex-Japan). They can only be seven years old and you will have to pay import duties and taxes, if you are not with an exempt organization.

Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series Hardtop
unattractive, only three doors, but simply the most rugged truck that is comfortable,
used in Nairobi is over $40,000, but the model with front leaf springs is about $28,000; they hold their value well; they are not available from Japan

Toyota Land Cruiser Station Wagon
5-door, versitle vehicle, still heavy duty,
the VX model is nicer than the GX,
many ex-Japan VXs are available at about $40,000

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado
medium duty vehicle
very spacious, can be top heavy, comes in automatic,
many ex-Japan are available for $32,000, older ones in Kenya are $22,000
they dont hold their value the same as the above mentioned

Also, you may want to consider the
Toyota Hiace Van or the Toyota Hilux double cabin pickup

Other non-Toyota products worth considering:
Landrover Defender
heavy-duty vehicle without creature comforts
can pull a lot, small seating, rough riding
it is hard to keep the dust and noise out of the vehicle
this vehicle tends to fall apart and is not comfortable
used is $27,000

Nissan Patrol
the older model are stronger than the newer ones,
parts can be expensive and harder to find.
not many are in Kenya

I would avoid Mitsubishi and Suzuki products.

http://karstreet.com/ is a good place to look and get some leads.
