I am dumbfounded that a rich neighborhood in Las Vegas, USA is cheaper to live than a place in Kenya. Any explanations? Food is expensive too.

it's a simple supply and demand issue. The demand in Nairobi is high and therefore the rent is expensive. Las Vegas has been hit so hard by the (double) recession that there is a low occupancy rate. Therefore the supply is much higher than the demand...and rent is low. Another factor is the advantage that the Kenyans take when rich Mzungus come in and ask for rental properties at well over market value...hence increasing the expectations or the landlords and artificially inflating the rental rates.

Yes rental is expensive in Nairobi. However, in Nairobi, we have the rental areas where Mzungus rent who have access to more money so the houses are nicer and rent more expensive. There are cheaper places you can get that are not Mzungu (foreigner) oriented that are a whole lot cheaper and affordable eg Langata etc and where more locals live.
