living costs in Nairobi

Hi folks,
I am considering accepting a role in a startup business based somewhere in Kenya. I have many questions, but the main one initially is to ascertain the ( rough ) cost of renting a furnished 2 bedroom apartment in a safe, expat friendly neighbourhood of Nairobi ( Westlands ?? ). I am an experienced expat and understand that there are a number of issues that I will face initially, work visa, car, insurance etc etc. Any advice on these issues is most welcome.
I assume the role could be based in Nairobi but that is not essential so any suggestions on other expat friendly cities would be a great help. I am really at the start of my research and I appreciate any help you can give in advance.
Many thanks,
Dave.

The rent of a fully furnished apartment in a nice safe neighbourhood is between kes 120.000 and 180.000 depending on the area and the furniture.

Thank you John,
I could also use a lot of general info about the practicalities of living and working in Nairobi. I would be working from home but needing to travel extensively into rural agricultural areas. Also, advice of social life, safety and general living conditions would be much appreciated. I guess the bottom line is, can I live and work there in a safe and enjoyable fashion.
Regards,
Dave.

I worked four years as an advisor on rural development in the then Rural Planning Divison, Ministry of Finance and Planning. I traveled all over Kenya with my Kenyan colleques and had the most exiting working time of my life. Since then Nairobi in particularly has changed and become much more congested so that moving from A to B has to be carefully planned timewise so that you do not get stock. But generally speaking Kenya is a wonderfull place to work on rural development and you just need to use your common sense to avoid being disappointed. Pls feel free to contact me on jc@pem.dk

Kind regards
