Having lived in Korea for the past 2.5 years and having traveled to Korea an additional year, the North Korean response is quite predictable at this point. Every time the Korean and US forces do a drill the North Koreans threaten to destroy the world. There was a good article in the Korea Herald this week that highlights North Koreas tactics very well. Every Spring when the North Koreans get hungry and the US and South Korea start the drills the North throws a fit. It is an outrage that so many in North Korea go hungry and are allowed to die each and every year. So my normal response to all this is that its the same game, different day. There are however, concerning signals in this round of escalations that must be managed very carefully. But in general I don't worry about my wife and children or living in South Korea. The world, including China has too much to loose if North Korea is allowed to continue much further. 50% of the worlds semiconductor memory or more is produced in South Korea and this would bring a big slowdown in economics if the production of South Korea was interupted. The US News organizations do what they do best. Create panic and headlines. They should actually look at the past 5 - 6 years and they would see the same pattern that the Korea Herald reported this week. Also the US Embassy has issued a statement that we should not be overly concerned and the embassy is not recommending any immediate or pending actions. Cooler heads will eventually prevail.
