" I''ll be moving to Kuwait to teach English at Kuwait University. What I''d like to know is, what is the expat scene like? What are the opportunities for socializing with other single expats with no dependants? Thanks for your help! Robin "

" Dear Robin; I decided to write you back when i got your message (expat-kuwait). I am from Kuwait and have decided to put my name on the expat list to help people who think or actually will be moving to Kuwait. The reason being is that not only i am from Kuwait and could offer advice as well as help and information, but also because i''v been living abroad in England and know how important it is to find people either from home or whom at least could speak the same language and know what are you goin through and how much you miss home. I hope that you would have a great time in Kuwait and enjoy yourself. If you needed any more information then i would be more than happy to find out more about what you would like to know. Regarding socialising, i am not quite sure but i have quite few foriegn friends and contacts who live in Kuwait and could also help you. I would like to take this oppertunity to wish you all the best during your stay in Kuwait. And i hope that you will enjoy this new culture experience. Regards; Aseel (I realise that you might not be familiar with this name so just for the record i am a female). "

" I normally don''t respond to these type of things but enjoy reading others comments. I spent two years in Kuwait before the invasion and two years there after the liberation. I''m sure that things have changed since I left in 1994 but then there was an active social life for the young expat population. At that time, it was not a punishable offense to bring a bottle or two of liquor into the country. Then , the worst that they would do to you would be to take the bottles, but you better check before doing so. The name Robin could be either male or female but if you are female you have both the best and worst of it. It is the best in that single females are inshort supply which is good for the gal. The worst is that a female has to be a little cautious about where and when they go. Kuwait is, or was a very repressed society sexually and a female should make sure that she is in the company of others when she goes out. I''m not trying to scare you, but incidents happened to my wife and other females on the project, so just be careful. If you are a party type, the Marines from the US Embassy used to throw some very good parties. I will be happy to answer any other questions from an expat point of view. Don "

" Life in Kuwait is, as in most of the Gulf Countries, very different than the West. People do not drink (in public) and life is slow. However, there are groups of expats who hang out together and are allowed to have booz and parties. Additionally, there are private beach clubs that are good hanging places. You will find it easy to travel among the Gulf countries, and my suggestion is that you take the opportunity to explore the region. Everything is pretty safe. Enjoy it! Claudia "

" Great response! Wow! Thanks for the answers! This is the first forum to get me such a quick response. Thank you very much for the info. I am a female and have lived outside the US for most of the last 10 years, so I know about personal safety issues. I''m not the type to go around town alone anyway. It has been my understanding that Kuwait customs does NOT any longer allow booze through customs. I''ll bet people, esp. military, have their ""ways."" Does anyone know of particular contacts in the expat community or with the embassy who would be willing to help out a single female? What about the US military? When I was in Korea, the military base was an important source of friends and psychological support! How does the US embassy view American citizens? In Korea, they seemed to be annoyed by, or indifferent to, our presence there. Whereas the Canadian embassy, for example, had a party for Canadian citizens on Canada Day every year. Anyone interested in communicating off-list--please email me! "

" Robin - > Does anyone know of particular contacts in the expat > community or with the embassy who would be willing to help out a single female? There are several groups for expats in Kuwait. The American Women''s League is a great organization and a support group. You can e-mail them at [email protected]. If you have any questions about our organization, you can also e-mail me. I believe there''s another group called ""WOW"" - Women of the World, open to all women of different nationalities who speak English. Sincerely, Christine "

" Lee, Thanks for the email, however, my name is Robin. Christine also answered my post. I am an American woman/33/single with no dependants. I''ll be teaching English at the Allied Health dept. of Kuwait University. I am supposed to arrive around Jan. 22nd, but the exact date hasn''t been fixed. I have lived in S. Korea, Spain, and currently Brazil so I''m quite familiar with the expat life. I have found that it really helps one maintain sanity to have other expats to get together with. Where I live now, I am the only foreigner in town--it gets pretty lonely, not to say BORING! I have heard that the Marines from the embassy used to have parties in a villa nearby. That was before the war, of course. Anything like that now?? I really appreciate your help! Robin "

" Robin I apologize for not using the right name. I am 37 single with no dependents. I have been in greenland, United kingdom, and several other countries in europe and kuwait. I have also lived in the phillipines. My father is a retired college professor and my sister is a teaching in florida for the University of North Florida. Yes the Marine house still has parties. I can also introduce you to several british and kuwaiti friends who will introduce you to the party scene in kuwait. You can have a good time here, and if you want I wouldlove to show you around kuwait. You will miss ramadan which is a 30 day period of worship (dec 9-jan 10 approximately)there is no eating or drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours. the kuwait police strictly enforce this rule and if you are caught violating it you can spend time in jail. it is not as bad as i am making it sound. after ramadan the kuwaiti''s have a 5 day celebration called eid. ramadan is to the kuwaiti''s as xmas is to us. I can show you around kuwait until you get your feet on the ground. take care. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Lee "

" Lee, I have the opportunity to apply for a contract position as a librarian at what is supposed to be a new library at Camp Doha. I am a reference librarian at Kansas State University now. My husband s retired military and would also apply for something too. What is life like there? We lived in Germany for 16 years and have also lived in Thailand. They say we''ll have housing on the economy: What does that translate to in real living conditions. The pictures and sites I have found so far don''t look too great. But if you have been there 3 years it must not be too bad. Dick''s (husband) email is [email protected]. Please send your answer to both of us. I work part time so don''t always check my email at home. Thanks for ANYTHING you can tell us. "
