" 1. what is the general cost of living in Kuwait? what are the specifics by market basket category? how does the cost of cars compare with the US - are you better to buy a car in the US and bring it to Kuwait or buy the car in Kuwait? how are housing and apartment costs? 2. can spouses work in Kuwait? 3. do you have to pay the 5% Kuwait social security tax or can you continue in the US system? can you opt out of the US sustem? 4. if you get Kuwait paid health insurance, does this cover you on trips abroad? would it cover your children who attend US colleges? 5. do Kuwaiti companies typically provide pension contributions? 6. are there volunteers who are familiar with Kuwait and would be willing to field questions on the phone? are other expatexchange.com members availble to talk? We have other questions but the cost of living question is currently the most critical? Thanks for your help. Joe Healey jshmch@yahoo.com "

" (1) Cost of living very high - (2) Cost of car about the same as US - leasing about $300mo (3) Spouses generally can''t work but this varies depending on what they want to do - (4) apartments very costly unless you want to live in Hawally which is a rats nest full of dead cats and garbage (5) economy makes no sense - government supports everything and going under fast. Oil can''t support a stable economy and be the only resource (5) there are none of the usual telephone privileges that Westerners use - no ATT, Sprint - no worldwide phone cards are useful there. You purchase their telephone cards and lines and it is a big expense, internet cost about$80-$100 month on the average Think of it this way - rent = $700 + Kuwait dinars = to about 3 U.S. dollars - rent will be about 250 bottom price and usually much much higher. The nice places go for 500 dinars. telephone $100 utility deposits$300 car $350 food $600 computer $100 Gas/upkeep $100 medical varies but most expats go to international clinic and that costs (by the way the medical insurance that you get it not good in Canada nor the U. S.) Unless your company pays everything you won''t come out ahead and the problem is bigger than that, you will need to get of Dodge to save your sanity on every opportunity you can and travel eats your savings.....better think twice unless you are loaded.......
