Moving to Kuwait - Safe?

I will be moving to Kuwait in January with my partner & my three year old son. I am worried that there won't be enough for my son & me to do and that there won't be people my own age to "hang" around with while my poor partner works all the hours! Quite selfish I know but i don't want to be stuck inside all day. Is it safe for me to walk down the street on my own with a buggy or am I worrying too much?

It is totally safe in Kuwait. I have twin 5 year olds and they have a great time here. Look at www.paguro.net, Kuwait city, community, events to get an idea of what there is to do on a monthly basis. Through paguro, we organise loads of things for the children, and they are fun, minimum cost initiatives such as picnics on the green island, cycling and roller-blading down the corniche, visits to the water parks etc.

There are some very nice Pre and KG, mum and tot groups available. Younger children are well catered for here, it is during the teen years that comparable to other countries, there is less available, but you and your little one should enjoy.

Ensure your partner (pls check that you have worked out the visa rules - marriage?? / muslim country??) is aware of costs of living etc as this is an up and coming region and you should ensure your package takes this ito account regarding housing etc, it is too late once you have arrived!

Most people have a great time here and we personally manage much more 'quality family time' than we would in Europe, so be selective about what you perceive from all the different sources of information.

I just wanted to say thank you for the information you gave me. Other replies made me a little bit worried. My partner is going over in december to sort out all our visa details and house etc. We have been told about the marriage rules but apparently it's still ok. Not sure how though but will find all that out in december. Is kuwait city the best place to live? Thanks again. I'm away to log on to your website.

The city itself gets very congested (as does most of Kuwait) so most people tend to live outside of the city - don't forget Kuwait is extremely small so traffic rather than distance is the over-riding factor. It depends on where your partners office is usually. The majority of expats live spread out from Salmiya, Surra, Qortoba and then all the way down to Ahmadi. As Kuwai is so small, you will usually find other expats in your area. The issue usually is apartment versus villa - villa's tend to be further out of the city, apartments nearer the city. Look at the houses that have been available in the www.paguro.net , Kuwait City , Community , Housing for an idea of prices

From the children's point of view, the criteria is being close to a nursery or school and these tend to be by default outside the city.
