My husband and I live in Washington, DC, and have been offered jobs in Kuwait. We would like some objective information on living details from anyone who resides there now. Appreciate any help you can offer in helping us make the decision:

- Housing: What is avg rents for a 2 bedroom in/around Saliymaya?
We have been offered a housing package, but unsure if it is adequate. we are thinking of NOT shipping much furniture/appliances, but buying there. any ideas of costs to do this? I have heard apt.s' come without any appliances - true?

- Language: Can you get around without knowing Arabic? Any good places to take classes?

- People: I read conflicting info on the Kuwaity people - is it safe there for women? and do women have similiar freedom to exercise outside (bike ride, rollerblade, etc.)?

- Are there any staples that you cannot get in Kuwait that we should think of brining? Books, personal hygiene products, etc.?
and, I suppose we shouldn't bring any electrical item from the US?

these are just some of the questions - again, any feedback is appreciated! thanks

I had hoped someone would reply to my earlier questions by now. Can someone give us some answers to our questions?

Thanx!

Sorry - I meant to get back to you sooner but I was waiting for the www.paguro.net Realtor to answer with more specifics on rent (watch out for the reply on the Pag' Kuwait city Housing forum.

Salmiya is a popular pace to live and is full of apartments ranging from KD500 (fairly basic - upto furnished, sea view apartment KD950-1000). I would not accept any less than KD750, which if you haven't got children (2 beds), allows you the freedom of apartment with gym and pool or house with garden.

You can get apartments with appliances - most landlords will supply for a little extra - everything is negotiable. Appliances are not hugely expensive.

Furniture is readily available - to give you an idea, Kuwait has basics such as Ikea, Midas, Sears, The One (similar to Pier Import) etc ranging to custom made.

Yes you can manage without Arabic and there are good programmes allowing you to learn - put a post on the Pag' site as I know some ladies teach Arabic who are subscribers, who teach at the better intitutions and I will also ask around.

It is safe, very little crime, if any, biking is fine (not good on the roads as the traffic is fearsome), outside exercise is fine, I rollerblade - you just have to be sensible wat you wear, even if you get a little staring, it is more so that we are unusual rather than suggestive.

The Kuwaiti people in general are hospitable, freindly and will always help you.

Books and magazines are readily available but certainly limited compared to the range you would get in DC.
Most American goods you can get here, the merchandising in one store is aimed towards Americans, tortillas, mexican range, crisco etc.
We are compiling a 'What you can't get list for Kuwait, Paguro' but basically off the top of my head, I can think of Pure vanilla extract, brand specific shampoos - these are more geared to the UK brands.

DON'T bring any electricals unless you bring a 110 - 240 transformer.
Many people bring a bread machine because it is nicer to make your own!
Hope this helps!
Please feel free to ask away!
