I arrived a week ago from South Africa. I keep getting asked if I'm american just because I'm european / have long blonde hair and both ears are pierced lol.
It's all about attitude - I move about purposefully and apply courteous manners in all respects. I'm walking alone in most instances so I step aside for people / don't stare at women / avoid overdue eye contact etc. This is something I do everywhere as I have lived in many places. The thing about Kuwait is that you will probably run into more foreigners than locals depending on where you are i.e. Pakistani's, Phillipino's, Indians, Bangladeshi's etc.
I have yet to encounter a confrontation and am slowly finding my way around. The only agressive arena are the roads - everyone drives like nascar and every evening the macho males all hang out on the streets revving their cars and burning rubber.

All in all - I'd say you're safer here than back home in South Africa.

Being American here does not seem to be a big issue.
If your spouse is not working, it could be a lonely place as it's pretty hot and dusty during the day when you're at work, so walking about is like strolling around in Arizona.

There is quite a large expat community here from I've heard - so I'm sure your spouse will be able to meet up with women in a similar position.

But hey - what do I know - I'm just a n00b here ;-)

Hi. If taking a job here, you should be careful about the driving. :) Get a big, safe car.

I've lived here for 12 years and find it a very comfortable life. But, if I wasn't working, I wouldn't like it much (same goes for the US). If your wife isn't working, there are a lot of social groups (like the American Women's League or American Business Council) or volunteer organizations (Operation Hope, PAWS, Handicapped Society, etc.) that she can join where she can make friends and get busy. The shopping here is good, but that gets old pretty quick.

If I can be of any further help, just holler at amerab@gmail.com.
