Hi All,

My fiance and I are interviewing for jobs in Kuwait, hoping to relocate there late this summer.

I'm hoping someone can give us some advice about the location of the schools where we are interviewing and the housing that is provided by the employers. Since we won't need two apartments (we'll be married by the time we move) we are planning to live in one apartment and collecting the housing allowance from the other employer.

So the apartments provided by the employers are in 1) Hawally and 2) Mangaf. The schools we are applying at are 1) Box Hill College Kuwait and 2) American Creativity Academy.

Since both schools provide transportation from the apartments to the school one of us would be able to utilize that, however the other would have to arrange private transportation. Any suggestions about whether it would be better to live in Mangaf or Hawally? Either because of location or distance from housing to school?

In other words, if you were in our position what would you do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Jennie

Good Day Friend;

Box Hill College is in Abu Halifa....it is nearer to Mangaf. Mangaf is in the South of Kuwait...American Creativity Academy is in Hawalli......and it is closer to the city center. I am not sure whether that info is much help to you all. Driving to Hawalli during peak hours a little bit of a nightmare. Both places have its own pros and cons.....mangaf is a nice place to live. I am sure Hawalli too. But driving from Mangaf to Box Hill surely just a brief driving....but driving to Hawalli may be a bit pain in the neck mate....

cheers

Mangaf is a nice area. It's mostly indian but it is accessible to a lot of areas. Don't know much about Hawally and the experiences I've had there aren't entirely positive.

Feel free to drop me an email when you and your fiance get in Kuwait. deb.w.petit@att.net. As far as I know I will still be around.

Regards,
Deb

I would suggest Mangaf. Drive from Mangaf to Box Hill is a breeze even in a rush hour, plus you have a choice of taking highway or the coastal road. The other person can be driven to Hawally and back, much better than driving himself. And btw there are Indians, Pakistanis and lot of Egyptians in old Mangaf. No one will house you guys there. You will probably be in one of seaside furnished apartments with other guys like you for company. Rest of Mangaf is villas populated by Kuwaitis and western expats. Best of luck!

If your future husband does not lland a job then he will not be able to stay long term. A man can sponsor an unemployed wife but a wife can cannot sponsor an unemployed husband. If his has a western passport, he can stay on a visit visa and do 'visa runs' to Bahrain every month or 3.
ACA will not give housing allowance as they have a whole apartment building for married couples. Boxhill will give about 3-400 kd a month which IMHO is not enough for truly comfortable living in a nice neighborhood.
If both of you work, lease a car for 90-150 kd a month - otherwise your quality of life will suffer.
If both you get hired, I would live in ACA housing until you get your civil id - then you can lease a car and move.
Look on the pdf version of arabtimesonline.com in the advert pages for a 'floor' rental in Mishref, and other neighborhoods. But a move away from ACA housing will take 6 months at minimum - maybe a year.
Don't live near other expats unless you really 'need' expat neighbors - Kuwait's so safe and many Kuwaitis rent a floor of their houses (with seperate entrances) to foreigners.

Thanks for all your responses. I guess if ACA doesn't give the option of a housing allowance we may end up living in their housing which means I'll be commuting to BHCK. Any idea how much a driver would charge to pick me up and take me to BHCK in the morning and back in the afternoon, five days a week?

Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my questions.

G'day Jennie;

The other day I drove from the city to Fahaheel/Mangaf in the morning. It against the traffic not so bad. Box Hill College just of the Hiway 30. I think it is about 25 minutes from the round about near the Holiday Inn in the city.
