Hi, I am about to come to Kuwait in January 2013. I am planning to come with my wife and 2 monts old kid. I have plenty of questions in my mind out of which i have put few of them as below.

1. What is the average cost of living in Kuwait (with family: myself, my wife and 2 months old kid)
2. How secure is the place for expats with family
3. Any restrictions on woman?
4. Any tax deductions on salary?
5. How about vaccinations and medication for the kid?

Thanks.

Life is relatively cheap in Kuwait. 2 bdrm apts run from 150-400KD/mo. Average price is 270 or so for two bdrms, one or two baths, living room/dining area combination, and kitchen. You will need to supply refrigerator and stove. All the rest comes with apartments here. Electricity and water are VERY cheap. Most apartments don't have heat, but we don't really need it here. Almost all have AC.

Food is cheap at the family co-ops, but markets like the Sultan Center are pretty pricey.

Gasoline costs 61 fils per liter. A fill-up is about $7.50 on a small car. Taxis cost 1KD-3KD per direction to almost anywhere you'd wish to go. Buses are 250 fils (about 90 cents each way).

There are no taxes and no salary deductions, unless you exceed your alotted sick leave or something. You will get insurance through the government. Nothing costs more than 2KD there. If you get private insurance, you can pay more but you get better services. The baby's vaccinations are 1KD, I think, or possibly free through the government clinic.

Kuwait is wonderfully safe - safer than ANY big city I've ever called home in the USA.

There are no restrictions on women. The wife should realize that she should dress conservatively here out of respect to the culture, but there are no other expectations. No bare midrifs, arms should be covered - at least at the top. Shorts cannot be worn by women in public. Low cut shirts should be avoided. Short skirts are not acceptable. Dressing "loud" and "flashy" is not appreciated. Jeans are okay and any loose-fitting shirts with normal necklines and at least short sleeves (over the elbow or long sleeved is preferred).
