" Just wondering if anyone reads this board. If so...I''m interested in info/advice from expats who live or have lived in Laos in recent history. Curious about how things really are these days from someone who is there. How difficult is entry for a period longer than 30 days? My wife is Lao, I speak Lao and haven''t been back since 1999. If you are an expat currently in Laos I''d love to hear from you and, if I may, ask a few questions. My plan is to retire in the next few years, build or buy a house there and spend at least part of the year there, part of it here. Thanks, Frank "

Sabaidee, I've made an internship in Laos from 1999 to 2000, so my informations may be a bit old... But I am married to a lao woman as well... If your wife has still her lao citizenship it should be easy for both of you to invest in real estate. Only lao nationals are allowed to own a house. It is quite hard to figure how much it can cost, to build a house, especially if you're a "falang", around US$ 15 000 to 25 000 is a normal price, depends on your negotiation hability... I was told that there are more and more expats living in Vientiane, so prices might be higher, especially since some lao think falang people are really rich. Sorry, but I can't tell you more the best way for you shall be geting there and take a look and why not get a piece of advice in Embassies there. For the visa it should be easy to get a business visa, the foreign expert card is more difficult to get if you or your wife have no special relationship with a civil-servant. I'm studying the possibility of moving to Laos this coming May. I have a job offer over there and as you can imaging any tips are welcome.
My main concern is about the coming rainy season. Is it raining non stop for 5 months? What people do for entertainment? How do you get around in Vientiane? Do people just stay home? I guess I don't want to find myself in a situation where it's raining all day long, and the only thing to do is to stay home.
Also, Is there an specific area of town where all the expats live? How much could be a one bedroom apartment there? Is it in Vientiane or outside? Would you recommend getting a apartment in the downtown, since it may be a more lively area?
Finally, Have you heard of any SARS case in Laos?
Thank you very much in advance for any information.

Hello, although I have not been to Laos during the rainy season,my Lao wife tells me that the rains are really heavy in the morning for a short period, then it usually clears up for the rest of the day.We have experienced rains like this on some of our visits near the end of the dry season. The bad thing about the rainy season is the condition of the roads, many are unpassable, this is getting better though as there are a lot of resurfacing projects going on.
